yes, that is the sending unit. not 100% sure how to check it tho...unless someone else chimes in before tomorrow evening i'll scan my haynes manual for you.

checking it requires a thermometer, a Ohm Meter, and a kettle of hot water. Remove the sensor, attach ohm meter (or continuity tester) to the leads. Insert in water heated to FSM listed test temperature, and watch the meter. If continuity changes according to FSM temp, it works, if it doesnt, then replace it. I think that is the temp sensor, but it is har do tell with that off the truck.

Just guessing (from the location you list) that it hasn't gotten that cold lately. Still, a common problem with the autos is that the engine does not warm up properly or the computer does not recognize that the engine has warmed up. Either way, the computer will not let the tranny shift into OD. I'd check the thermostat and coolant temp sensor before I started tearing apart a tranny. It's an afternoon's worth of work versus a week's worth.

Well i went ahead and brought my 4runner back from the shop this afternoon so see if i cant fix things myself. So far i got quite a list of different stuff to replace/check so ill let yall know whats goin on over the next couple days. Heres the list and its in no paritcular order. The order will be determined on ease and temperature outside. Let me know if you have an specific details or any advice on anything or have anythign to add.
-theromstat
-coolant temp sensor
-tranny solenoids numbers 1 2 and 3.
-EGR valve
-any sorta loose electrical connections between computer and transmission

before you tear into the tranny...fix everything in the engine and then go for a drive...see if anything changes before you do any unnecessary work.

still dont know which order ima do stuff in. If i do decide to tackle the headgasket myself then the t-stat and the coolant temp sensor as well as the EGR valve all come into play so i guess it would be wise to get that taken care of first. Like i said, i still dont know what im gonna do. Im having a hard time commiting myself to fixing the headgasket when my 4runner runs great. Smokes for the first maybe 30 seconds and stops.

I had purchased 2 year ago a used Toyota Surf (4runner) 1990 model, having a AW30-80LE (A340H)transmission problem (seems no 1st gear and blinking o/d after some time), at startup sometimes i notice something similar to clutch slipping, you step on the gas and it hardly moves.
I am not a mechanic but has some tech background, and tend to DIY depending on free time. So, I had brought down the pan , clean the filter and replaced the ATF. Old ATF was black color, smell burnt, found some small metal fillings in pan. Afterward, I notice some improvement, still problem remains. Time to ask for some help. Thanks God, I stumbled on this site, it will really helps to answer most of my frustation, I hope, for sure. But it has to wait...

I have solenoids out of a JEEP cherokee in mine. bolted right in. works great. $5.00 for all of them at a pick and pull. ALOT of JEEPS with auto's in the junkyard....

Look in the service manual for the procedure to check the stored code thats making the OD light flash.
Its most likely a solenoid failure. But read thru the procedure to check the code, the code meaning and what to check afterwards. It is all pretty straight forward.
If it is Solenoids like mentioned the Cherokees from the same time span pretty much have the same transmission except their transfer case is not built into the transmission.
Pop the solenoids out use a 12v battery to see if they function properly pay for em and install into your rig.
Just dd mine the other day. had code 62 or 63 basically solenoid #2 faulty.
Easy fix.

Yup same transmission, different bellhousing for a toy motor and a toy tcase won't bolt up to it. AW4 I believe is what they called it behind the 4.0. They were all made by Borg/Warner.
