the V6 is a stronger unit and can be installed into your 8" 4cly rear. you will need to match the gears up front though. unless you never use 4wd. if not youll destroy your gears and posibly transfecase.

Yes, you can swap them. The difference between them that would need addressed is where the driveshaft bolts up. The companion flanges have different bolt hole patterns for 4cyl and V6. The front axles have exactly the same driveshafts for both, so it's no issue there.
If it's a V6 3rd member you'll need to put your 4cyl companion flange on it, or drill new holes for your 4cyl driveshaft bolts.
I actually have a 4cyl 3rd member with the companion flange from my V6 3rd member on it so it's bolts to my V6 driveshaft. I do have a V6 pickup, but there are advantages to this supposed "downgrade" IMO.

You can bolt any 86-95 IFS front axle onto any 86-95 IFS pickup or 4Runner. No differences except ADD vs Non-ADD, and both will fit in place of the other. The 86-95 IFS front driveshafts are all identical shape/size, have the same bolt pattern, and will bolt to any 7.5" differential.

Are you going to be able to see and touch these gears? i.e. Will the thirds be out of the vehicle and you can closely examine them? If they are out, you can spin everything and make sure it is smooth. Feel for slop both rotationally and sideways. Broken teeth would be obvious. Also look for excessively shiny spots. You can also count the teeth (at least of the ring) to make sure its a 4.88. Also check in with YT member Zuk for expert info. Good luck.

I did this swap recently to get 4.56 gears. I have a 95 truck w/ 22re and formerly 4.10's. I used the front from an ADD equipped 4Runner I pulled from the junkyard, and I used a rear third that I purchased from Jarco in Canton, Georgia, which came from a JDM Surf. Obviously, I did not have ADD and was not wild about having the front diff/axle have the ADD equipment on there. So, I took the driver's side axle shaft and tube off of my 4.10 diff and put it onto the *new* 4.56 diff. Viola! Non-ADD equipped 4.56 front third and axle.
In the rear, I just pulled my third and bolted the new third in (well, I had to pull the axle shafts out, but that is easy... the manual gives good instruction on how to do this). It shouldn't matter if you pull a third from an ABS equipped vehicle or not because you don't have ABS so you don't need to hook anything up.
The V6 housing is supposed to be stronger than the 4cyl and has 4-pinion spider gears, so that is a benefit.
Mudhippy, when I put in the rear third, I didn't have to do a companion flange swap. Everything bolted up fine and I've had no problems. Also, what are the advantages to the "downgrade"? I've only heard of the advantages of upgrading to the V6 for housing strength and the 4-pinion, and I had never heard to swap out the companion flange before. Any insight?

There are two guys local to Birmingham who probably have 4.88's on hand--both focus on Toyota's. One guy will want to charge you $600, and I know he's got them on hand, but he's a crackhead and a touch rude. The other guy probably has them and would be more reasonable, but I don't know exactly what. Point is, if you have trouble finding the 4.88's and can pay shipping on top of the parts, let me know and I might be able to help.
