Post Tedabyte's '89 Pickup build log

Picked up this 1989 Pickup 3VZE 4x4 5-spd back on 4th of July as part replacement for my daily driver and part project truck.

The previous owner had it sitting in a barn on his farm for 10yrs and used it as a project truck to teach his kid how to wrench. So some half-assery is present in some repairs (chicken wire holding on fenders, ect)
Truck was over-all in pretty good shape, but had a host of minor issues that added up.
So set out on fixing all the mechanicals and then sprucing it up a bit. Should have started posting them here sooner to keep myself accountable.
Will do a big post in a bit w/ more pictures and updates.

At this point i've got it running solid as a daily and will probably wait a bit before moving onto next steps.

List of work i've already done: 9/18/19
Fixed short in dashboard fuse circuit

Fixed broken reverse Light switch

Full fluid swap and new spark plugs

Valve adjustment

Replaced muffler/exhaust

Fixed rough idle and broken vacuum hoses

Cleaned injectors

New Clutch, flywheel, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, solid shift bushings, new clutch master&slave cylinders
R150 Transmission rebuild

Replaced broken emergency brake

Replaced broken interior door handles

Rewired stereo

Replaced missing rear window latch

Replaced weather stripping and sealed up the cab

Replaced carpet & added sound deadening

New headlights, turn signals, tail lights

Resprayed tail light lenses

Replaced broken vent window latch

TOYOTA tailgate decal

Next steps and things still needing repair:

Fix broken HVAC vent switch and temp control switch in dashboard

New brake rotors and pads

Get roof lights working

SR5 gauge cluster swap

Replace drop-in bed liner for a spray/paint-on liner

Replace busted door cards

All new suspension bushings and shock absorbers

Long-term plans:

Since I do plan on keeping this as my daily for the time being, i'm not going to do anything to crazy to try and maintain some driveability.

2" OME suspension kit

33x12.5R15 tires (maybe 32x10.5R15 if I don't gear down so much?)

Swap the stock 4.10 gears for 4.88 or 5.29's

Tube bumper and winch

Edit:
Just realized there's a build-up sub-section to the forum, DOH
Couldn't figure out how to move this over there, but if a mod wants to that'd be great

Catching up on my backlog of progress

Okay a onetime giant dump of photo updates on my progress so far.

Bookshelf speakers as rear speakers courtesy of the previous owner

Ebay muffler/exaust

5 of the old spark plugs, not super bad but def needed changing.

Sketchy battery wiring and mounting courtesy of the previous owner

New Emergency Brake cable installed, that was way more fiddly than it needed to be.

Cut idle vacuum hose

Went to the local junkyard and picked up a new vent window assembly to replace the broken latch on mine

The busted up rear window latch

Outer weather stripping installed backwards courtesy of the previous owner

Kind of a bad photo, but the new rear window latch installed and wrapped with 3x layers of shrink wrap to get a nice snug fit when closed.

Replacing the old sealed beam headlights for some H4 bulb housings
Plus swapping orange turn signals for clear w/ amber bulbs

The rear taillight housings were pretty worse for wear so scrubbed them down w/ acetone and masked them up

Then hit them with a couple coats of chrome spray paint

New clear turn signal lens covers installed on freshly painted lenses

and another shot with the hazards flashing in direct sunlight.

Gratuitous dog shot with the new lenses installed

From Labor Day weekend: Start of the transmission rebuild and clutch swap saga.
Had planned to have the trans rebuilt and a new clutch installed in 4-days over the holiday weekend. Hit a few speed bumps along the way and it ended up taking 7 days to get it completed in the end.
Also replaced a host of other things while I had the trans out. New oil pan gasket, new rear main seal, pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, new clutch master&slave cylinders, ect, ect.

My father in-law was helping me w/ instructions in the FSM, but wasn't able to crawl under the truck and be much help on the floor. Ended up doing 90% of the work myself on this guy.
9.5hrs of struggle and many new curse words later I had the transmissions and transfer case pulled.

It looks so empty without the trans there

the old Flywheel, Clutch, and Pressure plate

a torched pressure plate

and a torched flywheel

This was my 1st transmission rebuild so I didn't get many pics of the trans rebuild since I was too focused on making sure I didn't screw anything.
But did get a shot of the trans w/ the casings removed

Went to reinstall the flywheel and snapped a flywheel bolt due to a mis-read on the torque specs.
Top tip, the 22R gets torqued to 80ftlbs but the 3VZE only get 65tflbs.
Lesson learned to read twice, torque once

The other 1/2 of the flywheel bolt

an hour or so later, successful removal

Skipping forward a day and have the transmission fully re-assembled and ready to reinstall.

and with the help of my wife was able to get the trans reinstalled.

After all the greasy work on the trans/clutch I needed to treat myself with an easy job. Finally installed a set of TOYOTA tailgate letters.

Flash forward another weekend and time to replace this smelly old vinyl flooring and 30yrs of farm dirt.

So. Much. Dirt.

An hour or two of scrubbing and vacuuming later and I had the new sound deadening installed.

And the new carpet installed

And that's about it for now.
I did order a new set of front rotors and brake pads, but turns out I picked up the RWD parts and not the 4WD
New parts should be here by this weekend and i'll dive into replacing those next.
