Take a look at this 89' 4Runner, lemme know what you think
I came across this 4Runner on craigslist today, I've been looking into buying another. How is the 22RE on reliability? I'm thinking about going to take a look at it this weekend. He's asking $4500 for it, considering all the work that has been done to it, does that seem about right? Or a bit too much?
Here's the pics and info:
Engine:
Newly Rebuilt 22RE 2.4L I4, (new head, valves, springs, cam, bearings, rocker arm assembly, pistons, rings, gaskets, seals, alternator, waterpump, timing chain, metal guide rail upgrade, upgraded cam/crank sprockets, timing chain cover, alternator, battery, belts, oil pump, fuses, all fluids)no leaks!
only 200 miles since rebuild, runs awesome!
Drivetrain:
Automatic Trans
new trans filter and fluid
new speedo cable
replaced fluid in front and rear diffs
Tires/Wheels:
Mickey Thompson Baja Claw 33x12.50x15
Custom Aluminums Wheels
New front brakes and rotors
Interior:
new vinyl floor
minor tares on front seats easy fix with seat covers
all interior lights work
Exterior:
Removable Top
New Head Lights
New Wipers
4yr old paint job
After market step bars on sides
Spare tire w/tools
All lights work
Suspension:
3inch body lift
Audio:
Sony Xplode Headunit
Pioneer speakers in the doors
added 6x9s in the rear
JBL subwoofer

Ya...thats what I was thinking too. I looked it up on KBB, and the excellent condition price was $2,500. Given that the engine has been rebuilt and body repainted, what do you guys thing would be a fair asking price? I'm going to go look at it tommorow, and I don't wanna low ball this guy....but $4500 is pretty high, you can get a 3rd gen for a few thousand more.

As far as the 22RE for Reliability...Duh ..on of the best engines out there
This type of vehicle can't really be priced by KBB IMO, goes to what the Market will bear..

yeah but it takes a sawzall to get the top off. Take a good look at it, has he done any work to the wheel bearings, brakes, TC, Transmission? Rebuilding and the price of what he has replaced can up quite a bit...

Very clean runner. I'd try to talk him down a K, but often times you get what you pay for. I just wish it didn't have the body lift. That can lead to some problems, but often times it works out too.
Go with your gut.

Even if the current owner has done those things, they are considered sunk costs since those costs are maintenance and expected repairs a vehicle owner must do to reliably operate the vehicle. To then say doing what is already expected of a vehicle owner enhances the resale value of the truck doesn't jive accounting wise,.......
However, you said it right, the price is whatever the market will bear. Sunk costs or no.

My 88 v 6 automatic won't hold OD with 33" tires. It wouldn't hold with 29" tires. Moot point. If your gonna try to talk him down, take cash and see if he takes it. I'd start at what you want to pay for it and take enough cash to go up some. Cash is a powerful motorvator.
But as said before, it's what the market can bear.

When you drive it, try the normal and power on settings for the tranny, I'm sure you'll prefer the power. With cars or houses, maintenace maintains value, not increases value.
