this could very well be the motor. I don’t have history on the truck. I just tried pushing in the tailgate ( which clicks when pushed on)-and using the key in the tg but nothing. the dash light says rear door intermittently. I will clean the switches tomorrow on the inside console between seats. It’s very dirty so the “ lock” position could be stuck. Thanks all. I love reading all the different posts/ topics here.
I guess you have no idea if or when the rear window worked last.
If the door (tailgate ) switch is not closing the window will never work. You really need a meter to trouble shoot this correct
A safety feature to keep from breaking the glass. If the tailgate is not closing correct the window motor will not work
If the tailgate latches are not adjusted correct or on of the cables is broken and the tailgate is twisted it is easy to break the glass .
Don`t forget you also have the safety switch that is open if the top is removed they go bad sometimes and will not allow the window motor to work.
The worst part is climbing over the seat to remove the tailgate panel from the inside.
I was working out of Town my 4Runner sat for about 3 months when I parked it the rear window worked fine after installing a fresh battery and fresh gas it runs and drives fine just the rear window no longer works just from sitting.
No having a working rear window kinda defeats the purpose of my hauling groceries.

Was it working or has it never worked?
Two things i would check. First, are all the bolts that hold the top on in place? One of them near the rollbar on the driver’s side contacts a switch behind the real panel. Second, there is a bundle of wires that comes into the tailgate. Look for cuts or breaks.(probably not).
To determine if the motor is OK you have to climb in, remove the rear panel run some jumper cables to the rear and then disconnect and power the motor directly with 12V. Alligator clips work well. Reverse polarity for up or down.
on the switches, wiper off, and window lock not engaged. You already checked the rear wiper park. When you activate the down or up switch, you should hear a relay click behind driver left interior panel.
ok, that’s more than two…good luck!

Thankyou!,I appreciate your time. I bought it about 7 months ago,the guy who sold it to me said it worked in the 2-3 months he had it. the window,I mean, then stopped. I had visions of the top off this summer, but found other things that needed more urgent repair.well, a mechanic found them.I understand about the tailgate/ lock. I have climbed over inside and did take the panel off, just to see if anything was broken. I will get that meter to check. Yes,it would be better to use the tailgate! Have a good day

Summer isn't over yet and you can get that top off yourself with minimal tools.
My 88 4Runner's head gasket gave up the ghost last October. Since Christmas was coming I decided to wait until this year to fix it. I took all the cooling and intake stuff off and put it in the back, my window worked then. This year the window decided to not work and nothing changed. So I just did what the guy in the video did to get the window down and took off the top. I'll get around to fixing it before the cold sets in and it's nice to have the top off.
Good luck !!

One more troubleshooting note, you can take the rear wiper out of the circuit by disconnecting the plug in the driver’s rear of the truck. You have to disconnect it when removing the top anyway.
