i think you guys are thinking too hard! drive it around a bit to get it warm(and get all the foreign particles suspended in the oil), drain it out, put the plug back in, refill it, and forget about it

How often should you change your gear oil out of your manual trans? I have the regular stock Toyota stuff, had my clutch done about 15,000 miles ago.

I vote for flushing it using clean, cheap new fluid and driving around a bit. Then get the case/trans as warmed up as possible and let the bitch drip dry overnight. I don't think you'll get much more thorough (or practical) than that.

I've been trying to save money up for swapping everything over to synth. Wish that stuff was cheaper.

Hey kinda off the subject but its got me wondering, when my tranny is really cold (sub 32 degrees) it really doesnt want to go into gear for the first few miles. Is this normal? Once I start going it smoothes right out. thanks

That's normal. Try shifting at -25 F. That is tough.

Oh c'mon 4X4nala, "less than retail"?! Gimme a break. Nobody pays retail for anything. Retail is like list price, it's a made up number so that discounts off it sound deeper.

Its synthetic, not cheap, nor really discounted for dealers...So a little less than retail is a good deal when I look at it. Anytime I see Amsoil in a store its going for retail, the same price Amsoil sells it on their website. I'm not out to make $$, just help some guys out with the expensive stuff.

This truck does have a lot of miles on it and I don't know it's past so I do think I will drain then add "some oil" (jury's still out) that will be compatible with synthetic oil. I am going to start the draining process this weekend and probably let it drain for how ever long it takes. No hurry since it's in the garage and not going anywhere. Man I hope not to find metal in the oil!

Make sure its hot or your wont get a lot out of the bearings, and none of the crap floating around.

Well, I can't get it hot for the initial dump since I have the gas tank off and am in the process of plating the frame "see sig". I would think that most things suspended would have settled down to the bottom after the last time it was hot, however, I'm gonna refill-run-dump at least once before I add the syn.

Thanks

I agree with 4x4nala You don't realy need to flush it out.

The tiny amount that is left behind is nothing to worry about. When I drained my tranny for the clutch install, I just let it drip untill it stopped.

When I switched (on my 2K civicSi ) from dealer oil to GM Syncromesh I did the same thing. Let it drip and add. Shifts like butta!

Is there anyway of telling if there is already synth. in there? I noticed while driving the 25 miles home that I couldn't even feel it go into each gear. I may need shifter bushings too.

Oh, I see what you are saying....brain fart on my end. I bet I could tell if it was synthetic if I had one of those little crank up plastic 4 gear high deals they have setting on the counter in the parts stores.
