Swapping the Combo switch 86 T4R to 88 T4R
My newly purchased 88 SR5 is pretty much perfect, except that the high beams only come on when flashing. They don't stay on. I have an 86 withe cruise and all that and the actual switches are actually in better shape than the ones on the 88. The lettering on the 88 is all faded off. My question is, has anyone ever bought one from and installed it from an earlier model 4runner? I know there are juuuuusst enough subtle differences that they might not interchange. I have the wheel off the 88 trying to do the 4Crawler fix and it looks like i can't get the switch off without taking the lower panel off as well. If nobody responds to this I will just do it tomorrow and see if it's plug and play. Like I said though, it would be my luck that the harness is slightly different (like the stereo harness for example) and it's kind of a pain to take it all apart.

Well the connectors are not the same. The big blue connectors match up, but there is a white plug that has two wires on the 88 and 4 on the 86 (both are SR5). I didn't feel like looking them up to see what they were or how to maybe adapt them...so I just left the 88 combo switch on there. Also, 4Crawlers fix for the contacts worked on mine as well and i now have high beams that stay on!

you need to read RAD4r's posts. he explains about the poor factory wiring flaw in the headlight circuit, and how to properly repair it. you should also seach terry87's posts for repairing the pitted or burned contacts in the headlight stalk.
edit, i see you found a link to repair the switch. now fix the wiring flaw.

The contact fix will not last unless the wiring is fixed. One can either:
1) Rewire by adding one relay like I did, or
2) Make / buy an H4 conversion harness. The harness may not work with cheaper, polarity-sensitive LED headlights.
