if the clutch is shot, it would take more revs to maintain a high speed like that

No problems Space-Junk. With an Auto those could effect it that way. But with a stick, the only way for engine RPM to change relative to Transmission speed is for the clutch to slip. You probably know from learning to drive stick that a beginner generally slips the clutch excessively, possibly eventually destroying it.

Nah, the taco made the same speed at the same rpm steadily since I've gotten it. The clutch isn't slipping (done the clutch test). Brakes dragging wouldn't cause the rpms to be higher than normal, the truck would just seem sluggish and seem not to have as much grunt, aside from the massive heat buildup and the smell of burnt asbestos lol.
The tcase is DEFINITELY not stuck in lo range. Lmao, you'd grenade your clutch at 40mph...
And nah, even if the truck was geared higher, lets say with 5.71s for the sake of argument, my 5th gear roadspeeds and rpms would still only be around this area:
2000rpm - 38mph
2500rpm - 48mph
3000rpm - 58mph
3500rpm - 67mph
4000rpm - 77mph
So basically, even with 5.71s, at 70mph my engine would only be at 3639rpm, NOT the 4000rpm it is currently. For me to hit 70mph at 4000rpm, with 31s, stock tcase gearing in high range of 1:1, and a stock r150f tranny with a 5th gear of 0.84, I would have to be running 6.28s in the diffs. Which, I can tell you is quite impossible. There are no such things (as far as I know) 6.28s for toyota axles.

Yeah, longhorns aside, Austin has it's nice way of driving me straight up the ****ing wall whenever I hit that solid line of traffic right about at slaughter lane...

does it sound like youre running 4k rpms? Try downshifting to 4th next time youre on the highway, then you'll know for sure if youre spinning 2800 rpms or 4000 rpms

And you know what... I dunno what these 3.4's are supposed to idle at, but I just remembered that mine was idling at 1200rpm. I didn't think that was normal. Seems to idle smooth as velvet though, so maybe my tach IS off... Then again I come from the diesel world, where my cummins idled at 500rpm, and none of my other toyoters ever had a tach, so I never paid it any mind. Thoughts?

Sounds like a bad Tach! It should sound like it's reving pretty high "at idle" if it is really running at 1200+/-. I'm pretty sure you would notice and think something is wrong

So, how do we diagnose a bad tach? Slap my multimeter on it and either ohm it out or get some voltage reading?
I was just thinking... Isn't there a pot on these that you can turn to change them from 4cyl to 6cyl like you can do with the 86-95 sr5 cluster swap?
Think I remember reading something once that when people would swap the sr5 cluster out of a 3vze into their 22r/e, they would have to make some adjustment for it to count the 4cyl revs correctly? Cause what I'm thinking is if it's something like that, maybe that pot got turned somehow, and now it's thinking it's reading like a 4cyl, thus displaying a higher rpm.
Make any sense, or should I take off my brain storming hat?

I got you some numbers today;
55MPH = 2100 RPM
60MPH = 2250 RPM
65MPH = 2400 RPM
