Stuck in gear
New to the page. I’m in nj searched around couldn’t find much. I have a 88 pickup 4wd 5speed my dad bought the truck brand new I used to daily it and it has now been sitting two years. The last time I drove it was in the snow (4wd) and it got stuck in their gear and will not come out. Took top cover off didn’t see much, clutch still has pressure. Hoping it’s something stupid but again don’t know much about it someone please point me in the right direction before I rip the trans out. Thanks in advance

Stuck in 4 Low or High? Do all the other gears work, I mean does it move forward and /or backwards at least? Can you move it over to the other 4x position, or just stuck in L or Hi? Sometimes reversing direction can help move out of 4 to 2 wheel. If stuck in 4L, I dont know.

Just a couple weeks ago I left mine, foolishly, in 4WD when I got out of the show/ice and into the city. I tried to pull into a parking place, and everything started binding up. I reversed about 10-5 feet, too far, went forward again a little less, but straight ahead, not turned. Nope, not yet. I did this about 3 or 4 times and was finally able to push the transfer case shifter into 2 HI. WHEW! I left the hubs locked, because I knew I was going to hit snow/ice on the way home, but not in 4WD. When I did hit the snow/ice, on a hill on the highway of course, I just shifted the transfer case into 4HI and away we went.
Something else that might help is to put the transmission in neutral, shift the transfer case, then put the transmission into whatever you need. Sometimes it helps, especellialy 4L to 4HI.
Good luck!

Oh wow. Stuck in third gear. OK Then!
All those moving parts are inside. I (not knowing much anyway) can't think what would have changed inside; the shift levers that move shift rails/forks stuck somehow? Because if it STARTS, without jumping, then the clutch really is disengaged, right? And that would mean the force is off the input shaft so the counter shaft(?) would not have a force acting on it. Does the shifter stick move? Maybe the shift fork came loose from the 3rd gear rail?
You might have to drop it anyway (if you haven't already). You pulled that top assembly off under the stick, and theres nothing obviously wrong there then? If the stick moves but its stuck in gear, that slider on that top bar may have come loose?
Geez I don't know. (Actually that's a phrase heard from me quite often). Sorry I can't be of much help here.
