That's exactly right. Excessive bearing pre-load leads to excessive friction and excessive wear.

"Final" torque on the adjusting nut (after seating the grease) is 18 ft-lb. Then you actually check the preload by pulling on one hub lug bolt with a fish scale. From there, you tighten/loosen the adjusting nut as required until your preload is in spec. Finally, the lock nut gets torqued to 35 ft-lbs.

Thanks a lot guys. Haha this is a great first experience on the forum! I will post up a shot of my modified 2-1/8" socket in a bit. It was a lot of grinding lol.

Was the socket too thick to fit in there so you had to grind the outside of the socket?

You should really try to get that broken piece of bolt out so that you can replace it. That holds your CV axle in there tight.

Well i dunno if its differnent but i have an 86 4runner and i've never tourqed that nut. I never thought it was a big deal. Tighten it down then loosen turn hub tighten turn hub lossen turn hub then tighen agian...never torqued... Maybe its differnent with the old auto lockers. but i've changed the bearings 2 tiwce in my truck and never used a torque wrench or anything. I just taped it around with a scewdriver and there is snap rings on the from you can see them in the pics dude. And the dude "Ardent is correct its about 18lbs which would be about right for pliers or a tap around screw driver i mean really. If you tighted that nut to 50lbs the bearing would be extemly to too tight. The bolt broke but unless he wants to spend lots of money in the fix and getting another bolt it wont hurt to leave it there a bit.... not long though. That bolt on my 86 4runner holds the locking hub on and thats it. Must be diff in the new models.

Alright, I got her all together again. Took it out for a little test, and things seem ok.

Here are the rest of my pics:
