Steering gear rebuild/ socket size worm

Steering gear rebuild help. Does anyone know how to take this off. Tried to make a tool to remove it but didnt work. It did move half a turn. I measured it and looks like 1 13/16. Rebuilding my dads steering gear since its been leaking.

Do you have the manual? http://web.archive.org/web/201209150...12gearhous.pdf

Whatever you were measuring, it certainly was not 1 13/16 inches. Automobiles (even US brands) haven't contained Imperial-sized parts for at least 40 years. Perhaps 46mm?

My bad. I measured and did the math
1 3/4 + 1/16 = 1 13/16
so conversion might be 46mm
Ive searched and have not found a single thread meantioning how they got this off. Unfortunately this does not have the simple pins to twist open easily like other how to's. It is 8 sided. Im thinking i might have to look for a hub socket and grind it down to make it work.

Unfortunately I dont have this version of steering gear. Since mine does not have the pins. Has anyone been able to remove 8 point lock nut in my steering gear type. Or have any tips to remove?

No one has dealt with this it seems.
tried to fabricate a tool but it still won't budge. I loosened it a bit but wont move anymore.
posting since I'm sure someone will run accross this problem.
tools I made

it pops out when trying to twist. The lip is just too small to prevent from sliping off.

Try adding a handle to your tool extending out the top. That way you can put pressure evenly on both sides as you twist.

Might finally give up on this. Drilled two holes and made my own pin wrench and still won't budge. I think I might just tighten it back how it was. I wont be able to replace the seal on this part unfortunately. Does anyone know if I could replace this part with the non socket version with the oin holes? Or are they different sizes?

Dude I feel your pain. Every thing was going great until I got to where you’re at. I even posted on YT to no avail. I went to redhead gears and bought a remanufactured one and the thing hasn’t leaked a drop since. They took mine all apart as the core and shipping wasn’t too bad because it fits in a medium flat rate.
something to consider cause I think the seal in there is what causes it to leak.
