I just picked up the truck from the dealer. Parts replaced under the recall:
1 04004-70135 Rod, Steering Relay
1 45460-39505 Rod Assy, Tie, RH
1 45460-39505 Rod Assy, Tie, RH
1 45700-39085 Damper Assy, Steering
4 wheel alignment
Overall very painless. No calls of parts that need to be replaced for additional $$$, just a call saying that it was finished. They even changed my oil & filter for free!
Haley Toyota/Scion of Richmond, VA the Hull St. location.
I highly recommend this dealership if anyone is in the area.

So I'm a little behind the times and just called Toyota about this SSC. I qualify for it and so luckily for me I spent some time last night and read through all of these posts. I have a game plan made and all of my info collected. So I think I'm ready to go to the dealership. How does this sound, this is what I plan on having done:
1.) SSC 50N Steering Rod Relay - FREE
2.) Oil Change - Just being lazy
2a.) New drain plug
2b.) Check the oil pan (might be bent)
3.) I have some missing bolts on the brackets that bolt above the oil pan, get these replaced.
4.) Inquire about a clutch replacement and Rear main seal - Don't actual plan on having these done however. Just price shopping
My goal, is to spend a little bit of money and have some minor work done that I just feel like being lazy about. This will hopefully fool the stealership and have them just "FIX" the recall issue correctly and not try and rake me over the coals! I will also be able to get a price quote for some work that needs to be done, and I need the stealerships price quote to force me to do i myself (which I really want to do but I need to be shocked at the price vs doing it myself). Wish me luck!

Recall honored! Plus...
I just bought a '92 3.0 4Runner 2WD. After reading all of the info on here about the recall, I called my local dealership. They replaced the steering relay rod. They also replaced the A/C Extension Valve which was also recalled. My head gasket was said to be fine.
No cost to me.
I asked for a full check-up to see if anytrhing else was wrong. They said everything else was great.

Guys, if you have questions about ANY recall......
Just call your local dealer service department, give them your vin# and they will run a recall check for you and tell you what your vehicle qualifies for

do you have to go to the dealership to get the steering rod replaced. i live in steamboat springs, co. the closest dealership that i know of is down in the front range. about 3.5 hours away on good dry roads. one time it took me 8 hours in a snow storm. i only have one full day off of work each week, and don't want to spend it driving to denver and back.

Call a dealer and see, but I'm pretty sure they're gonna make you take it in. If they'll send you the part, it's pretty easy to install. If you need help with it, let me know, I could come up there over the weekend.

2 days later I get a call and the parts are in so I can bring my truck in. I did just that, oil change, front and rear diff fluids, lube drive shaft, transmission fluids flushed, all of the messy maintenance items I have been putting off. I also had them check 2 brackets that were missing bolts. $240 laters I'm done. No hassle. They told me to expect a call at the end of the day or the following morning. That same afternoon they called and said they had a few cancellation so the mechancs/tech's tagteamed on my Yota and got her finished for me.
No extra charges, no hidden fee's. My truck was washed and vacuumed plus the missing bolts were replaced at no charge. They detected a small leak with my valve covers ( I knew about this) and they only pointed it out. No pressure to have them fix it. They even provided me the gasket numbers I would need to do it my self. As for my clutch...they quoted me the job and the Service Manager said that "with what you have already done, there's no reason you can't do it yourself!" WOW HONESTY!!!!

A++++++ job guys and gals!

My experience
I recently had the head gasket and relay rod assembly replced on my 92 4x4 extended cab pickup with a 3vze with 220,000 miles on it. They replaced both under recall for free. The head gasket included new valve cover gaskets and the relay rod included an allignment. I also had then put in a new timing belt, water pump, and knock sensor pigtail and all the engine belts while they had the entire top end of the engine off. The total cost to me was $420 and I got new coolant out of the deal too. The cost was mainly due to the water pump which was $260. I had the service done at Wilson Toyota in Ames, Ia.

I just got my relay rod replaced today (50N) by Greg Orr Toyota in Searcy Ar. & they had me done in two hours on the nose & vacuumed the floorboards too. They seem to be all business & their shop is new & clean/well organized. If you are in this area I believe they can be trusted; they never called me & asked for extra repairs to be done or anything & their work looked right & it drove fine.
Just thought I'd give my .02 on a positive experience.

I just got mine done Monday and they told me that the inner and outer tie rods where frozen so they could not do an alignment plus they did not have the tie rods in stock. I told the tech thanks for the info and asked if he drink beer and he said dah of course and he told me the brand so I left and went to the local beer store grabbed a 12 pack of his choice of beer went back to the stealership and asked the service person if I could talk to the the tech that did my recall because I forgot to ask him a couple key questions. The service guy called him up and we went to my runner and I gave him the beer we then went to the service desk and he told them that they needed to order the tie rods for my truck and set me up an appointment to in stall them and that it would be covered under the recall per TOYOTA AMERICA and I was always told beer will get you nowhere and nothing I beg to differ lol
