Toyota recall

Yeah i received a letter in the mail about my other 1990 4-runner qualifying it for the recall. Just call your local dealership and they will advise you what to do. I didn't do anything cause the engine on my 90 is shot and they won't accept my 92 hilux.

Here was my experience getting my '94 truck taken care of:

Called the dealer at about 5:00 on Monday when I got home from work.
They told me they could do it tomorrow, so I went and dropped it off that night.
They called me at lunchtime on Tuesday to tell me it was done.
I picked it up and they didn't charge me a dime or recommend a single other service.
They replaced the relay rod, tie rods (both sides), and all four tie rod ends.

This was at Miller Toyota in Manassas, VA. It couldn't have been any easier.

This sounds about right.

I actually had my 2in. sus. lifted '93 4WD Pickup at the dealer for a radiator and they swapped out the steering bar too on the recall.

I'm not sure what's it's called, but it's the one that has the stabilizer connected to it and goes all the way across. Never had any problems before, but new, free parts are always nice.

Avoid Toyota of Oxnard, California, they misdiagnosed an electrical problem I had them check on at the same time, recommended $1000 of unnecessary work, and didn't do the tie rod ends, and didn't provide a full alignment. Never again!!!

Just dropped my '91 4 runner off at the stealer, they said about 5 hours to do the job. Asked if they could give me a carfax report on the truck. They said yes for $20.00. I said I could do it myself for that and being a dealer I'm sure they pay a flat rate subscription and when I asked him they said yes but it would still cost me $20.00. They made sure they had the right phone # to contact me 3 times!!! So I'm sure I'll need a lot of extra work done (lol).:pat: LET YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! Just a word of thanks to the forum 'cause I wouldn't have known about the recall otherwise.

OK, here's the poop, said the front end is fine, did alignment. Bad news, said front brakes need replaced(knew that), oil leak at oil cooler they said bad O- rings, knew I had an oil leak somewhere and they recommended replacing the timing belt, truck has 186,000 belt was replaced at 113,000. They want $680 to do all the work. If they don't do it I'll have to do it so I told them to go ahead. Doesn't seem like a bad price from the stealer but I could be wrong. Damnit I knew I'd have to pony up some dough. Just bought this truck like 3 weeks ago. It's in good shape inside and out cosmetically. Plus it's paid for so I'll just pretend I've got 2 more payments and paying it off early (lol). My '88 runner is much kinder to my wallet!!!

Talking RECALL done on both my trucks

My 89 and 95 trucks have had the recall already done. They replace the whole bar that the tie rods and idler arm hook to. This steering arm is about 4 ft long. My 95 was bought with this part broken. They do brake. It lets the steering wheel turn freely from one of the wheels. The one on mine broke at a dead stop in a parking lot and was towed, where I bought it for next to nothing and had toyota fix it for free! The dealership replaced $400 in parts and alligned my 89 for free. It's rusted out and has 300k miles! they never blinked an eye.

Which dealer did you go to? I'm trying to choose between Parker, Appleway, or Downtown in Spokane. I bought my previous truck from Parker and have always been happy with them and their service.

I got my card in the mail for my 1991. Is there anyone out there who can reccomend a stealership in the Buffalo NY area? I have heard bad things about most of them and not much good about any of them. A push in the right direction is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Steve, I went to Parker in Coeur d' Alene. They installed the steering rod and gave me a free alignment no charge of course. I needed front brakes so I let them do that turn rotors and pack bearings. They told me I was just over 70,000 since the last timing belt so I had them do that plus replace the water pump and thermostat since they were already in there and would charge me no labor for that. Had an oil leak on the o ring on my oil cooler so they replaced that and that's a pain in the a-- to get to. When they replaced the timing belt they noticed the crankshaft pulley was sloppy took it off and the keyway was all wallowed out bad (not good). Replaced the crank pulley, new key of course and a new crank seal. They saved all the old parts for me so I could see for myself. Truck was there 2 days. Picked it up and it ran great/ drove great, no more slight pull to the right, and no more oil leaks. Labor $632.40 Parts $364.38. 12 month parts and labor guarrantee, unlimited mileage, that's right unlimited mileage! I may have saved some dough going to a shade tree mechanic but I think I got a fair shake. People there are very friendly and I believe pretty damn honest for a dealership, but this is still a pretty small town. If you decide to go there say you want to talk to Laurie Gold, she's great and a former Toyota mechanic.

Thanks spudrunner, that would be what I would expect out of them. I think I'll avoid Appleway at all costs and call Downtown or Parker for the fix. I think my T needs it with the bigger tires and locker in the front.

For the Canadian Toyota Owners, if you call the 1-800 US number they will say you that you are not affected!

You must call the Canadian Toyota Headquarters.

The Number is: 1-888-869-6828

Turns out that my vehicle is affected...

VO6 Special Service Campaign

Yesterday the head gasket blew on my '92 Toyota Pickup and have been researching the internet for a possible recall. I have read some postings for such a recall as early as 01/06 but it sounds that it may have ended. I contacted my local dealership and they told me that only head gasket recall is for the '98 model only.

The recall has never been completed on my truck as far as I know. Can anyone provide with some insight of who to contact, recall exp. and recommendations of what to do? Thanks.

Pittman,
Don't know what motor you have, etc... but just do a search for the head gasket recall and the steering relay rod recall (50 N?) on this site. The relay rod is more recent and Toyota should have sent a notice to you if you are affected. There have been more than a few threads about both recalls and people's experiences.
I have had both done on my '92 4Run 3.slow 4wd.
Only problem I had was that they could not set toe on my runner due to seized tie rods ends.
Good luck,
J

Yes, if you have the 3.0 and an open recall, (VO6) it will be fixed. But you need to call a warranty clerk and have them run the VIN to see if there is an open racall. Or, PM me your VIN and I will run it to see if its still open. If its been done, its closed, but who knows. Dealer said 98 only??? Stange as the 98 never had a headgasket recall of any kind!
