Spare Tire Mounted on Hood

Has anyone seen or done a spare tire mounting on the hood on a 2nd Gen 4runner? I love the way it looks on the Defender 90's and it would allow me the ability to care 2 spares that I usually do in Mexico.

Not too thrilled with jacking with center of gravity by placing on roof, but that is where it is now.

could be kinda cool. But I can see more problems than benefits though.

The Defenders are designed to carry the spare on the hood. The hoods are thicker, and stronger, for just that reason. Think about the kind of damage you could to to your hood lugging it on and off the hood, not to mention the sheer weight (I know my spare is probably 60lbs) on the fairly thin sheet metal of the hood.

Other problem I could see would be visability. Defenders sit you very upright, with a really low hood(and resessed for the tire), so you can easily see over it. A 4Runner sit you back more like a car, so easpecially when you're on an angle, it'd be a bitch to see over a full sized tire (especially if you run 12.5's+!).

If you really want two spares, I'd say your best bet would be a roof mounted one, and one on a swing away carrier.

If you need 2 spares, agreed! Plus, it doubles as rear body armor!

You can always build a custom dual tire carrier like the one on the photo attached.

Actually it's Shiftless89 that has it and it's CBIOffroad.com. See this thread.

I guess mounting your spare on the hood is another reason for going tall and . . . . . . really skinny!

I think a tire on your hood would get you some attention from the highway patrol.

I love my stock spare mount on the back of the tail gate. I'm starting to think I'm the only one who has one left... other 2nd geners I see have the spare underneath.

Na-ahhhhh! The Porkchop came with the tailgate carrier, as well. IIRC, it was an option on the 90-91 and was done away with in 93? Only 2 years of the 2nd gens got 'em.

i dont understand why you would do that. i have the tire on the back, but i notice that my bumper has the hole for the thing that lowers the tire if it was underneith. and there is a open spot under there that if you got the right stuff from like a wreaker that you could probably mount another tire under the truck. seems like a lot of weight in the back but it seems possible.
