So what sort of axles should I be looking at for 400whp
As usual, I can't just leave my vehicles stock. I've settled on a 400whp build for the truck. Engine, transmission, and transfer case have been chosen, but I'm on the fence regarding front and rear-ends.
I've heard a lot of talk of beople shattering ring gears when they atart pushing some serious power on these trucks. The MKIII Supra guys run 400whp and more through their 8" rear-end with no problems. Even the MKII guys pump some pretty decent power into the 7.5", so what is it about the truck that makes them so weak?
Let's assume for a minute that I leave the front-end alone, and want to run it in 2wd with a bunch of power. I've settled on an autolocker in the back (for the snow). Gear sets have yet to be chosen, but strength is going to be the first choice, then tire size will be determined after that. Anybody have any input?

I'm guessing the guys who shatter gears are running too much backlash (ie: .015"). Spec is .007" IIRC. Over time, backlash seems to increase, at least, that's been my observation on old diffs- they end up with .011+. Also, bearing preload goes and then the ring gear can deflect away from the pinion and further increase the backlash under load. With the load really shallow, teeth chip.
Now, where are you going to get 400rwhp? Those Supra motors are probably getting their 400whp at 6000rpm- hardly very useful on a truck.
I would look for high torque instead of horsepower.
400whp and an auto locker on snow... that's going to be fun in Calgary for 4 months of the year.

how about a dana 60 front..then a corp 14 bolt rear?...
theres guys around here that push 600hp through stock dana 44's...so a dana 60 should hold 400hp..
if thats not your cup of tea...go with 2 1/2ton rockwells..you cant break them..haha

A dana 60 up front might not be out of the question. I kind of like the whole ford 9" idea in the rear.
Motor is to remain under wraps until it's complete. The reason for the build is just because. The power isn't for the snow, the power is just for the sake of having the power. Being used to driving a 500+whp car makes me want a little more power when I drive the truck.

Put a Spyder Trax 9 Axle in the back, it should do nicely. You can order the tubes to match the stock Toyota. Or a Currie Custom Axle
the only limiting factor is your fab skills and wallet.

Why bother? The yota 8" is comprable to the ford 9" in strength.
I have seen toyota axles survive with all sorts of v8/high powered powerplants under the hood.
Get a v6 rear end and upgrade the axle shafts. Good time to swap in rear disc brakes too!

i've seen ford 9" rear ends withstand 800-1000 hp on drag cars...comparable to a toyota?..dont think so..
hes talking about 400whp..how would a toyota axle withstand that..when i've seen them bust with a STOCK 350!
i still say dana 60 in the front..then corp 14 in the rear..i've seen them hold well over 1000 hp on mud drags..lol

I have seen plenty of v8 toyota with stock rear ends. They rip it up but I have never seen them break a rear end. Depends what you're doing with the truck I guess.... Stock 350 breaking a yota axle? thats weak.
