slack in rear diff?

while doing a random u joint check I noticed i could rotate my driveshaft by hand about 1/8 a turn before it would start turning my tires. My u joints are fine and the truck drives great. I would have never noticed had i not been under there. i assume its in the 3rd, but im confused as to why its not noisy, or vibrating. Any thoughts on what is causing the slack?

Every one of many drive shafts that i've turned by hand has this "slack". chev, toy, ford, etc. it is normal and you do not have a problem.

1/8th turn isn't enough to worry about.

Sorry RE-RE, I thought this showed up automatically from my profile. It's an 87 4runner, locked in the rear with a detroit and up front with a lockrite, with 4.56 gears. Just hit 200,000 miles on truck, about 15,000 on mods. dp503, I"m aware there is a small amount of slack in all drive shafts, but it seemed excessive to me. That being said this is the first toyota I've owned so I'm not as familiar with it yet. I guess I'm just paranoid. Thanks for the feedback.

I noticed the same thing with my new front diff that has a detroit. I pm'd Zuk of gearinstalls.com and he said that kind of play was normal for a locked diff.

I had play in mine; turned out the diff bolt was loose & it was blowing out oil. Ruined my 3rd....
