I have a downey intake with a used MAF from California Mini Trucks. My old intake wasn't mounted level and oil dripped down into my MAF and air filter. replaced them both.

 

try shorting two terminal...Te1 and E1...I think.
see if the idle change...if not, your TPS sensor is out of adjustment..
mine is like that...haven't taken it off to adjust it. Hard to do while on the engine.

Are all of your new intake components properly sealed to one another, i.e., no leaks?

Other than that after swapping them out, did you pull the fuse to reset the ECU so that it would automatically recalibrate itself to accomodate the new components?

 

Do you mean disconnect the negative battery cable and let it sit for 30 minutes?

 

No, pull the 30 Amp fuse in the little box under the hood.

If you type "reset ECM/U" into the "Search" window, you'll find all sorts of threads on how and where it's located, some with pictures even.

 

So after this if it doesn't settle down would you be leaning more towards an air induction issue or fuel problem?

 

Always going the easiest route first when troubleshooting, I'd be leaning towards the the "air induction" and then proceed to the "fuel" issue.

 

How did this turn out? Was it fuel or Trans related?

I'm having the exact same problem as in the orignal post. It started a few days ago after returning from holiday travel -- I've put about 1200 miles on it in the last month. The truck did the same "jumpy RMP/sluggish/anti-incline/ no-response to gas" thing about 5 years ago when we bought it and we were told to replace the speed sensor. The problem stopped in a few days, we never replaced the sensor and now, after all this time, it's back?! It's driving hit or miss -- I'm treating it gingerly, driving as little as possible. It's been sluggish/rough but hasn't fully acted up since early last week when the RMPs went nuts around 30mph and it wouldn't move from a stoplight until I floored it. I'm supposed to see a Trans specialist on Wednesday but after reading this thread I'm thinking I've been digging around in the wrong direction? Maybe...? Help!!

 

I have a 92 4Runner SR5 -- I should have included that.

 

i had the same problem with my 88 4runner with manual transmition, i replaced TPS and o2 sensor and i have had no problems since.

 

yeah, my tps could be bad, but i need to get a new one and test it out. i probably need an o2 sensor, so that might be the problem.

Linux, what you said about the speed sensor...mine has been disconnected since january of 05. A friend told me that didn't have anything to do with it... What are your thoughts?

 

Lets see my TPS was bad, but when I tested it it tested good because the test was for closed throttle and WOT and both closed throttle and WOT worked fine it was everything in between that didn’t work. After weeks of banging my head a lab scope confirmed that TPS was partially bad so was sketchy between Closed throttle and WOT, this resulted in me needing the put the peddle to the floor before the runner would really do anything, and then it would jump to life
I replaced the TPS and o2 sensor at the same time so I don’t really know which made the big difference, I just had really really bad idle during warm up and sporadic acceleration. The o2 sensor can be tested using a mulimeter on some terminals but I don’t remember which try a search. Sorry but I really don’t know if the TPS was it or the o2 sensor.
