My truck used to do the same thing. Turns out that the choke flap wouldnt close because my carb was a piece of crap. Try choking it manually by putting your hand over the half of the carb. (covering half of both barrels not covering a whole barrel.) If it is a EFI engine i wouldn't know what to tell you except maybe buying a new throttle body.

h/g is head gasket. Alot of times when you have a small internal h/g leaking into your cylinders, it will run rough with the coolant in the motor from sitting but after it clears out it runs ok then

make sure you do not have air in the coolant lines burp you coolant system
also make sure you do not have a air leak in between your air flow sensor and throttle body sensor my 4runner when it was cold out the rubber would get hard and it had a crack that would leak once it got warm it would get soft and seal it self back up.

Does the engine go into a fast idle when it's first started up? Does it continue to idle a little faster than normal before it reaches normal operating temp? If not, your Auxiliary Air Valve is clogged or dead.

auxiliary air valve

i need to know where this air valve is on my 22RE 1988 also!
and what is the ohms it is supposed to read ?? how to test it ??
i have cold temp lean sputtering problem especially low rpm load.. miss, chug, jerk
when its fully warmed up it runs great and lots of power
idle speed always normal, hot or cold, a little miss in the cold idle though, shake in engine idle when cold
MAF is good
TPS is known to be bad
TB unit i removed and cleaned, intake is full of gunky tarry nasy carbon
plugs are VERY dry and light tan
cooling system is perfect, pressure holds good, no leaks ever, no missing fluid ever in 4 years that ive owned it, daily driver 145k miles always reliable
thanks
