Rocker Arm Cover

Rocker Arm Cover
I've got two questions regarding the rocker arm cover (or valve cover). I am planning on changing the rocker arm cover gasket, there is a small oil leak under the 22re symbol. My haynes manual recommends using a sealer once the new gasket is in place. My two questions are as follows: 1) is there a particular sealer anyone recommends; 2) does the engine oil, radiator fluid need to be changed before/after or at all following this fix? I am also open to any recommendatios from those who have performed this fix .

1) black rtv, aka "ultra black"
2) no. just wipe off the area and allow time to dry. also follow the instructions on the tube.
that cover is problematic. the curved side of the "D" plug is what gets the sealant

The gasket kit will come with the valve cover gasket and two half moon gaskets. The sealent should be applied to the bottom of the half moons. I also put a little bit on top to make a seal bewtween the actual valve cover gasket and the moon itself. Any oil resistant sealer should work; FIPG, Ultra black, Ultra Grey or the "right stuff".
You do not need to mess with the coolant at all. You will have to remove some vaccum lines, so make sure you mark them so you put them back in the right place.

The gasket set for the valve cover should come with 7 pieces: two "half-moon" seals, the gasket that goes around the valve cover and 4 seals to go under the nuts that hold the valve cover down.
Call me weird but I tend to use Hylomar for all my sealants. I've used the same tube for intake gaskets, oil pump and such and no leaks on my 88 4Runner.
Anyhow, sealant should only be necessary on the upper left and right of the "half-moon" seals, specifically where the half-moon seals meet where the valve cover gasket "ring" meets.
And don't over tighten the hold down "nuts".

abec, you are write I looked at the gasket set it comes with 7 pieces. Do you happen to know the torque value for the "hold down nuts"? I appreciate all the help from the rest of you.

a bit tighter than finger tight... that is to say: the book will tell you around 4 ft-lbs, but that's still was too tight for me.
if you torque it to spec, the rockers will hit. loosen from there until you don't hear the knocking anymore

i am glad you got the correct gasket you can also get the gasket without the halfmoons and grommets .
Which some places will give at least around here if you don`t ask for the complete one.
Might also be a good time to look at the pcv valve grommet as well as the vacuum hoses.
