I have been told that it is generally good practice to briefly hit redline on Toyota 4 and 6 cylinder engines about once a month to clear out any carbon deposits. I know that my 22R-E will take it, but I have only redlined it roughly 4 to 5 times during the 15,000 miles that I have owned the truck. It certainly wouldn't be absolutely necessary, but I was wondering what others thought about this practice. Also, does the 22R-E have a rev limiter? I once accidentally revved it to somewhere around 7500 rpm in 1st during a difficult driving situation. It is still fine and runs virtually like new with 188k miles. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I think it does have a rev limiter....somewhere.
I don't think redlining it is necessary, however, letting her stretch her legs every once in a while isn't bad practice. I like to yank some gears every so often and get er up to 60 in a modest.......well, I don't know how slow, but it's slow.
I also recommend seafoam. I use it most oil changes to clean out deposits and sludge in the top and bottom of the motor, as well as fuel system.

About once a week I will run my 3.0 pretty hard, shifting at about 4200rpms, and so far it is doing good. I wouldn't ever recommend hitting redline, a friend takes his 4 cyl jeep to the limiter quite often and with less than 80k miles his motor is having more issues than I am with over 223k miles on the 3vze.

Think the rev limit on our 22re's is somewhere around 6.2k or somethin. I'll occasionally shift around 4.5k if she's feelin a little playful. Otherwise she really likes to be shifted around 3-3.5k, and when I float it I shift into the next gear around 2.5-2.25k on the downfall. But thats me.

ive hit therev limiter on my 22re p/u a few times, andevery now and then i drive her like a bat out of hell.
im scared to rev the v6 runner too high, so much more to go wrong there.

I'm all about stretching the legs on my toyota. I know there is a guy that thinks he is running a marathon everyday when he leaves work with his 4cyl. I'm pretty sure that he is that way all the time. I think the engines like the challange, but wouldn't do that so much with the 3.0L. There's something about her that she doesn't like to get beat on all the time.

I never believed in "blowing out the carbon" in a motor. I rev it to about 3.5-4k during normal easy driving and I don't think ragging the piss out of it would help anything. If you're worried about carbon, run a Seafoam treatment like suggested and save your motor.

In the carburetor days, I got the motor hot, then carefully poured small amounts of water down the carb to remove the carbon. Works great BUT you must be careful not to pour too much. I always worked the throttle and water at the same time. For FI engines, I suspect you can disconnect a vacuum line from the throttle body and put it into water. The right port will pull some water in and accomplish the same feat as I did with the carb motors. When the water hits that hot piston, it will remove the carbon.

Uhhh that is not from taking it the rev limiter that is from driving a Heep. I run my 3.slow pretty hard all the time. I'm a believer that how an engine runs is a direct result of how it's driven. Ever driven grandpa's Tacoma that has never been over 3 grand? I can about guarantee it'll feel like a gutless pig compared to one that has been ran hard it's whole life.

yay. something i have experiance with. lol. yes, it has a rev limiter. when ur in gear that is. i dont have a tac, so cant tell u what it is, but its there. i run my yota hard almost all the time when im driving by myself, and it runs fine. 36 in 1st, 62 in 2nd, 93 in third, and thats as far as it goes with rev limiters. lol. i can promise, if u drive it hard for long enough and work it in, it'll love it.

no doubt. i dont red it on every gear every time, but on occasion. of course without the tach its more of red sound it. i say dont worry about the revving or the limiter or anything. just drive. if u wanna gun it, go ahead.

36 in 1st? Apparently I've never actually redlined it before, since the highest I've ever gone is 32 mph. (That was the point when it sounded like 7000-7500. Toyota officially states the allowable maximum as 6200, but I think they can be taken higher than that. These speeds are with the standard 5-speed manual, (a W56 I believe or possibly a G52)?? Seems kind of high to me, especially the 93 in third, as the owner's manual states 70 as the "maximum allowable speed" in third (not necessarily the redline, as I know.) I don't have a tach either, so I can't really tell.

i run my 3.4 hard, was playing in some water and got it a little high for comfort 5.5k-ish, its got 226k, i think the fuel pump will go out before it can revve to high. ( it stalled and wasnt getting gas at idle after that but its back to normal)
