Rev/tach problem

I don't have a tach in my 87 runner so I used my multimeter on the coil and as I rev the engine it revs smooth and gets up there just fine but the meter climbs to about 3,000 then starts jumping from 3,000 ish to 750 and so on. Any ideas? I found a bad vacuum leak at the ps pump and fixed that and now it idles better but I can't figure out this little clitch.

He said he doesn't have a tach. I think he's trying to say that his motor actually revs wildly above around 3000 RPM.

I'm sorry, I'll clarify. The motor revs like normal, it's just the meter is saying that the revs are all over the place.

The meter is good, I use it on my v8 all the time and it works fine.
