replacing alternator brushes without removing alternator

Has anyone tried replacing the alternator brushes without removing the alternator. It looks like there is enough clearance to pull the back plate off, allowing for the brush holder to also be removed. It's a little cramped but maybe some of you have tried it and succeeded.
