The oil pump has a dowl that it sits on to line everything up. Make sure you get a new o-ring for the back of it....I though I could get a way with the old one, started leaking so i had to tear the oil pump back off..... sigh

I did not use any RTV and I have no leaks. Now mind you I only did the HG not the timing as well. If you use RTV do not use it on the HG, you can smear a small amount on the others if you so desire. Only a small film is all you need. Then again if you have everything torqued correctly you shouldn't need any.

ok what does dowl mean? is that that like little piece of metal that has the timing numbers? lilke 0 ano ther question where exactly do i place the petroleum jelly at? inside the oil pump? like do i stuff it with jelly?

Recalling what others have done, yes pack it full, like packing bearings. Hopefully someone else will chime in who has done this. Maybe look over OlHarleyman's or iamsuperbleeder's build.

Here is a bit to read over. Don't forget to use assembly lube when putting the head together. You will want to use this on the cam, cam, bearing, rockers and such. this is what I had used.

You use this lube prior to install. It's very tacky and will hold to the bearings quite well so they stay lubricated while the oil makes its way to them. You will want to put this on all the bearing races and lobes of the cam.

I have used Ultrablack or Ultragrey RTV on my last 2 trucks and never had a problem. I had a cork gasket once and it seeped. And to answer a prev question, I did remove the diff to drop my oil pan.

Some people have mentioned pivoting the diff down, there are 2 large bolts at the rear of the diff holding it that you can remove, then remove the 6 CV bolts on each axle stub and pry away the CV, and then maybe you can loosen that front diff bolt and it might pivot enough to get the pan down.
I just completely removed mine, of course I was swapping in a 4.88, but with the way I had to tilt and slide the pan to get it off of the oil pickup, I think completely removing the diff is the way to go. Clean the gasket surface really really well, I scraped mine to remove the old material, then I wire brushed them, then I cleaned with starter fluid and wiped them dry. RTV on both the pan and the engine block.

So THIS is how you get to the oil pan, right? Those 4 bolts? And then what? Put a jack under the front to suppot, or jack it up to move it?
I imagine this is how much you can do with the block still in the truck. I don't have an engine hoist or stand, I imagine you don't either.

Are you going to change out the timing chain or at least the driver's side guide? My guide is GONE! Was tangled in my distributor / cam gear area....and it still ran!!! But the chain likely went through the wall, hence my mess (see my thread link below).
Do you have pics of what the headgasket looked like after you took off the head?? I have to get a deep 14mm socket to get off my exhaust manifold, maybe today and then take off my head, maybe, today.
How did you get off the crankshaft bolt and pulley?
I am behind you as far as progress goes....I'm VERY slow and nervous, but YOTATECH has been helping me. Never done ANY mechanical work like this. Changed the oil by myself this spring, that was a 1st for me....so everything I do ,I do for the 1st time.

I simply unbolted the 3 diff mounts and I was able to rotate the diff down out of the way. I didn't have to touch that brace.
I did have to unbolt the oil pickup tube before I was able to pull the pan out.

ok after i installed everything why is it making this noise it justturns over but doesnt crank ios the timing off 180?
