my alternator is starting to go out on me. turn signal started to make my charge needle jump around last night and the headlamps are flickering. anyways im all about oem parts, hell you usually cant convince me otherwise, but I will occasionally look for rebuilds if its the right brand. I assume the oem alternator is nippon denso for our trucks. does anyone know where to source a good denso replacement that's not 250 bucks at the dealer? im not interested in GM one wire or conversion so lets just curb that now.

I looked up the denso part number on their web site, took the number and bought one off of ebay. Its been a while but I think it was about 125-140. Im not sure.

Looks like $230-250 for a new OEM, $150-160 for a rebuilt OEM. I used part # 27060-35130 to search which fits 87-92 according to most sites. Off brand ones go for $75-100.

yeah I already sourced it form the dealer at 250, and I don't use Chinese parts so that pretty much eliminates everything from local parts stores and rockauto. I looked into a few rebuilders but they all use cheapo rebuild parts. may just end up biting the bullet and going through the dealer.

update. I ordered it through my local parts guy at the dealer a few minutes ago. they did me about 220, BUT the catch is that Toyota is backordered on them and they estimated arrival date it about a month out. it IS a reman by Toyotas contract with nippon denso, new is no longer available. part number still comes up for an 87 as 27060-35060 but it supersedes to p/n 35061 I believe.

What I bought was a denso reman. Its been on there for several years and has worked fine.

Pretty much every town has a couple of small shops that rebuild alternators, generators and small motors. I recently had the alternator fail on my '91 4Runner and since I had just changed the bearings in it a couple of years ago I thought it would be worth checking out the local rebuilders. The guy at the shop I went to had a matching rebuilt on the shelf for $150 but was sympathetic to the fact that half the rebuild (bearings and brushes) was already done.

I watched as he electrically bench tested my unit (dead for sure), partially disassembled it, checked the rectifier (couple of bad diodes: not good), rotor winding (resistance in range: good) and stator winding (open circuit: very bad).

He skillfully knocked out the stator winding and tapped in a used replacement ($25), put in a new rectifier ($20), reassembled and tested. Bench tested 100% functional! So less than 15 minutes and $45 later I was good to go.

What I learned was that, like most things, the guys who work on these units every day known them inside out and can usually get you back on the road pretty quick. Definitely worth checking locally. (All prices Canadian)
