one of the ministers at our church has an old (20 years and 300k miles old) civic. he was about to have it towed to the junk yard when he called me. he said it was squealing like crazy, and smelled burning rubber, and the engine couldn't stay started for more than a few seconds before stalling. i grabbed some wire cutters and headed that way. i popped the hood, had him start it, saw the AC compressor pulley was locked up, cut the belt off, had him start it again and it worked just fine. haha. that was 2 years ago, he's still driving it.
nowadays you got serpentine belts, all of which run the water pump. so if the belt breaks or if a pulley locks up, you're towing it somewhere till you get it fixed. like i said, the good ol' days when each accessory had its own drive belt.

I've driven with, and I driven without... maybe I'm spoiled, but after driving WITH powersteering, I will never own a vehicle again without it, lol
not only is it convenient, but with it being rather inexpensive to fix and keep up, I consider it to be worth every penny of a repair
personally, I'd price up a new pump, or even see if you can scrounge one out of a junk yard. they don't give out too often, given you don't spring a leak and run it dry mine has almost 299k miles on it and still works great; no noise, no leaks, and my power steering works great I have replaced just about everything other than the pump though, lol; pressure and return lines, gearbox, fluid flushed (both times)... oh and make sure you're using ATF, NOT PS fluid

i have mixed thoughts about installing PS
i fugure im building muscle driving this way. I have a 350sbc and 35's with a welded rear and i admit it's a bear.
on the trail the killer is the steering wheel whiplash!!!!!!!
don't stick your hands in the wheel unless you want a broken wrist!!!! hit a log wrong and your finished!!!!
i also believe if the tires don't want to turn that way, then drive a cleaner line. overall less stress on the steering i think!!!
haha i still want ram assist so i can turn through the tight trails with a single finger!!!!!

i can imagine...
think about this, if you dont want powersteering on your truck, then swap over to a manual steering setup...
when you have powersteering and it stops working you actually have to work HARDER than those without powersteering... why??? you have to physically push the fluid around the lines and the resivoir via the gearbox...
if you dont want it, take it off and swap it with someone who does want it...

The power steering pump on my 93 3vze had a phantom leak and I could not get it stopped, so after 3 qts of atf in a week just decided to cut the belt and been driving ever since without the p/s. Driving in snow is no problem actually feels like it has the system back on snow covered roads no assist nessesary, and it is definately easier on the front tires since they will not turn excessively to make scrubbing an issue. Im for going with no P/S!

You don't need to cut the belt off, you can just slip it off around the fan...
Keep that 22re idler pulley bearing clean. That sucker can seize. It gives a lot of warning though, lots of rumbling and bearing noise, engine drag ( noticeable at idle) and burnt rubber smell.
