So I've got a 2nd gen 95 4 runner and my rear roll down window started giving me issues. It will roll down with the centre console switch but will not roll up, but it works just fine with the key. Hopefully someone can help.

Probably a bad console switch. Less likely a disconnected wire at the console switch.

Pull the center console apart enough to remove the switch, shoot some contact cleaner into it, work it a few times, and see what happens. Worst case, replace the switch.

Sometime in the past 20 years, someone must have spilt coffee or soda or beer (HSSSH) on that switch and cause contact to go bad.

Easy to check with am ohm-meter.
In neutral position middle contact will have no continuity with any other contact.
In Up position, it should have continuity with one contact.
in Down position, it should have continuity with the other contact.
If above tests fine,

It could be problem with the wire between switch and the UP terminal of relay.

Things do wear out

 

what i had to do there was pull the wires off of the back of the switch, and short 'em across with a paper clip, to positively eliminate the switch as a factor.

after replacing all the relays on the rear window control circuit board, it was weak connectors on the harness end of the plug, going into the relay board, now appear to be an issue.

i cleaned the connections on the card, bent the harness plug contacts back as best i could, then tie-wrapped the harness plug to the control card box, so it wouldn't vibrate around.

i now have reliable up/down from the console, but the key switch only works in one direction :-/

why couldn't they just put a manual hand crank in there, like the old station wagons used to have.

 

I remember manual window cranks, but mostly what I remember is them falling apart after about 75,000 miles and/or about 7 years. No chance a mechanical crank would still be working after 20+ years and 200K miles, not if it was regularly used.

I had my rear window fail on a trail run. Stuck down, of course. I ended up jumping 12volts directly to the motor to get it rolled up, and after that it worked fine! best of luck to you

 

That could be the classic case of the rear wiper jiggling out of the park position and opening the interlock switch. Definitely the first thing to check when the rear window stops working.

 

Huh, hadn't thought of that but it makes perfect sense. Interesting!
