Rear Suspension question

i was thinking about getting 3” blocks for the rear of my 1986 4runner to accommodate 33” M/T’s but i was wondering if at that point i would have to go with different shocks or if the stock height shocks on there currently would work with that height adjustment

thanks in advance

Why not a proper spring lift? Or at least the Zuk mod with springs that would lift it and improve ride quality?
No, stock shock would not be long enough. A friend's friend's snapped both shocks on same wheeling trip for that reason.

I believe you'd need new shocks.

I have the Zuk mod in my 4R with 33". I don't have problems with it, but @wallytoo commented about the possibility of snapping the brake lines if the springs get lose. As far as I know, there is not reports about something like that happened, but made me think about it.

Did you use the 12” or the 14” springs? im shooting for about 3” of lift in the rear so from what i see i should go with the 12”. 14” seems to give about 4.5” of lift. this deff seems like the better way to go now that im looking into it

I installed in mine Black Magic coil springs, 5" x 12" 125 lbs.

The way it looks with the zuk mod and the 33" tires:

There are certain years of Jeep TJ coils that will work as well, the ones I used were front coils off a 2001 TJ I think. Year could be wrong. The bottom of the coil reduces down to around 2.5", which sits around the rubber bump stop rather nicely, and the top is about 5" which fits around the metal U on the frame nicely. They came about 16" long, and I cut them down to 13" to get my rear back up to slightly over stock height.

I had about 1.5" between bump stops before adding coils.

my rubber bumpstops on my #1 '87 are gone, which means i'd have to replace them to make the zuk mod work. i replaced the springs in 2013 with oem-style springs from sd springs in penn. they are sagging a bit now 7 years later - i might go with the chevy springs next.

@87-4runner Those South West Speed spring taper down at the bottom like the photo that was posted above right? Because they only offer the 5” O.D size springs which will go around the upper bump stop and would have to narrow down at the bottom to fit on the lower bump stop. Theres no pics on their website

EBay, it was a few years ago, I can't see them in my purchase history anymore.

Anyway, I found these ones but they are 13", you can try them like that. If they are long for your truck you can cut them later:

For No-Cut, No-Weld zuk like Someday's and 5Fists, springs are tapered like on 5Fists photo:

My solution to that is capture screws on the upper bump stop. I did not know about the tapered springs so I cut my upper bump stops to use straight springs. I used 12-inch 125lb springs and I believe they restored stock height. Top of leaf pack rom frame went from 7.75 inches to 10 inches.

RETAINING SCREWS

TWELVE-INCH, 125-POUND BLACK MAGIC SPRINGS

TOP OF LEAF FROM FRAME BEFORE ZUK: 7.75 INCHES

TOP OF LEAF FROM FRAME AFTER ZUK: 10 INCHES

This is with the truck empty. I'm guessing 13-inch or 14-inch @125-pounds/inch springs would give you around 2-3 inches lift from stock.

I just took my wheel cutter and cut off the very bottom of the upper bump stop bracket, then used a large Cresent wrench to spread them enough to get the springs in... no need for retaining screws.

mind you, they do make some strange noises til they get seated good
we had another 87-4runner i did the zuk mod to the same way nearly 20 years ago still sets level and never been any issues

Back then.... daughter was in high school and we were ready to go on a basketball trip from Oklahoma to Illinois for a summer league tournament.

Today... gave this one to our daughter, (she doesn't get the turbo 4runner) lol drove it during her college days and wanted it.

On these in the pic they dont taper on either end so they wont work on the bottom bump stop right? you need one straight end and a tapered end for the 5” to work i believe

Those WILL work. You can see from Radrunners pic they fit fine over the lower bump stop.

You just have to jack the truck up by the frame so the axle will drop down enough to get the springs in place.
