The engine run GREAT, but I am having fuel delivery issues to the engine using the electric fuel pump. I am quite sure its a vapor lock issue because the problem only occurs if the truck is sitting idle (you can see the bowl is dry through the site glass of the carb). The fuel line runs a little closer to the exhaust than what I would like, and the pump is up under the hood. I plan to relocate the pump back at the tank and re-route the lines away from the exhaust. This should solve the issue.
I have lots of power with the 5.29:1 gears (runs high RPMs though) and 42" swampers. I am thinking about reducing the gears to 4.88:1 to see how much is lost in 5th gear torque.
Just to help along those that want to make this switch, please do not get rid of your Toyota CPU....Although I think I can get all of the gauges to work with Toyota sending units and tapping into the wire harness, I think the speedo is not working due to the CPU missing. Tach, temp, oil pressure and fuel all seem to work ok. I have aftermarket gauges connected right now to get a feel for the trucks operating parameters, but I think I can reconnect the factory gauges since I now have a good idea how they match up to the aftermarket ones.
As for the speedo, I am going to see if I can somehow get around the one I have. For now I am just using my laptop with GPS mapping software to tell me how fast I am going.

I'm not sure I put these snow pictures up from March, with the new chrome lower valance and showing some flex. ;-)
I've got better pictures of flex, but it's kind of hard to get hold of those pictures when they're on the opposite side of the world.

i'm kinda planning on a 4.3 swap, any advice?
1. 1996 - 4.3 Vortec (rebuilt stock with an eldebrock alum. intake)
2. Downey Off-Road adapter kit that included or purchsed along with:
Bellhousing adapter for the Toyota transmission
Clutch slave cylinder
Motor mounts
Transmission adapter mount (for the crossmember)
Clutch and pressure plate (pilot bushing and throwout bearing)
143 tooth flywheel
Temp and oli pressure sending unit adaptors
Alum. Radiator
All the nuts and bolts necessary for the conversion
3. High torque starter for a 143 tooth flywheelClutch slave cylinder
Motor mounts
Transmission adapter mount (for the crossmember)
Clutch and pressure plate (pilot bushing and throwout bearing)
143 tooth flywheel
Temp and oli pressure sending unit adaptors
Alum. Radiator
All the nuts and bolts necessary for the conversion
4. Aftermarket HEI Distributor for the 4.3
5. Aftermarket electric fuel pump (low pressure unit for carb)
6. Duel exhaust with knockoff FlowMaster muffler
7. Various belts and hoses to adapt to the radiator, heater core, etc...
8. Barry Grant Demon Carb (525 CFM)
9. Power steering pump, Alternator & A/C Comp (didn't come with the 4.3)
All of the little things needed to adapt the throttle linkage, vacuum lines, power steering lines, etc were home made or home brewed adaptors (non kit).
Re-routed alot of the wiring to match up to the new configuration.
I did have to cut and modify the thermostat housing to adapt the stock one to the intake. It pointed in the wrong direction when mounted as is. I just cut it and rewelded it to match up with the stock 4.3 hose which worked great.
I also used a low pressure electric fuel pump instead of using a high pressure one with a regualtor. Its just a preference but you could go with the regulator especially if you use the stock fuel pump (mine was toast from sitting too long dry)
If you are going to use the fuel injection then the above mod is not necessary since you would be using the stock intake. This is where the GM CPU will be required. My understanding is that you leave all of the sensors and such intact and add the Toyota temp and oil sending units using the supplied adaptors from Downey to connect to the Toyota CPU. The GM CPU will use its sensors to keep the engine running properly, while the Toyota CPU is strictly for monitoring Oil, temp and keeping the speedometer working. I think for the tach, you would just splice it into the signal from the GM CPU and it should work. The fuel sending unit does not require the CPU to work the guage.
That is kind of an abreviated version of the build. It wasn't too complicated once I got a few pointers from a mechanic friend of mine. He was a big help when it came to getting the wiring adapted and the actual rebuild of the engine.

thanks, cblackard i'll keep all that in mind.
i've got an '89 4x4 s10 with a blown 4.3 that i would love to build a 350 for and leaf spring it with 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton chevy running gear. (i'm trying to find a cheap suburban, i like the old pickups and k5 blazers too much to hack up) if all that works out and my 'yota keeps acting the way it is i'll build up a carb'd 4.3 for it.
i'm glad the stock toyota tranny and t-case hold up good with a 4.3, i'd like to keep the 700r4 in the s10, and keep the yota 5spd.
ok now back on topic

I dont give a crap wheather its here or not. Chevy can suck it as far as I'm concerned. But for people who are searching for info on this swap it would be beneficial to have it in its own thread. I would encourage the original poster to start a new thread with this info on it. I think it is good info that would be very usefull to others. Just would like to see it in a location where it could benefit more people.
