Dry lake beds are not always dry.

So I have been driving on this dry lake bed for about 15 years and never have run into a problem till last week.

You can drive on it in two wheel drive with no worries.

So we headed out on the lake bed and about a mile out I ran into a soft spot and told my brother in law "WTF", about 100 yards later the passenger side sunk.

We were along ways from help like 50 miles from the closest human being. We would have a long walk if we could not dig out.

So we both knew we had to dig it out the right way the first time.

First we needed something to put under the tires. There was an old fence about 1/4 mile away so off we went. Half hour later we had four good wooden fence posts. We dug for about 45 minutes till we rocked the "Hilux" up on the wood. I had it 4 High and once I got up on the post I was gone in reverse throwing mud 30 feet in the air with the STT's and never looked back or I mean forward. lol

I could not go forward because the mud got deeper and was the same on the left and right so straight back was the only way out of this mess.

I have been driving my truck so long that went I backed up, I followed exactly in my rut that I made going forward. My brother in law pointed this out to me. I laughed when I saw my ruts.

I think having it in 2wd saved us because if I had it in 4wd going in, I would sunk to the axles because the mud got a lot deeper just a few feet ahead.

I won't lie but when I got stuck we both got the "Pucker Factor" because we both knew it was a pretty serious place to get stuck in 100 degree weather.

OK, not quite as much as the 85 CR500... but then what could? hahaha. SMOKED superbikes with that CR, ...but WOW, that 600 was FAST, man... shocked me how much power/torque that thing possessed. Now OBVIOUSLY THAT LIL CLASSIC you have is SICK, and it's a whole other 'plan' going on there... Just made me REALLY miss having my bike to hump along, ya know? lol. How's that lil beast treatin ya, buddy?

Oh boy... here I go........ too tempting!!! http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac...173942054.html

Man, call me paranoid but this is exactly why I like watching the show Man vs Wild. Seen every episode on Netflix. Some of the stuff he's has come in handy on my long hiking trips.
BTW its for situations like this that I always make sure to have somebody else come along in another vehicle in case you flip, get stuck, motor dies anything... With the exception of my last off road trip with chef, I usually always take a shovel, extra clothes, an ice chest full of watrr snacks and food, first aid, rope, jumper cables, tools, extra wire, tubes, etc... Never know when you'll need it or will run into somebody who doesn't have the right equipment.

I'm thinking of buying some Maxtrax grip pads for the floor to use in situations like the one you got into. You dig under your tire and stick them underneath your tires to get grip on the spikes so u can climb out of it.
This definitely would have came in handy for you:

Like I said call me paranoid, but I just like being prepared in the worst possible situation. Lol

LMAO great story man. Glad you got her out. The soil in CO is fun to figure out. It looks the same wet as it does dry. But when it's wet it turns to glue and can swallow a full size Silverado. Ask me how I know...

Looks like a blast though... Minus getting stuck..

First day with the rear locker, found me a nice little rock to test it out on. It may not be pretty, or even run very well, but I love my yota.

Couple pics from yesterday, out wheeling/eating/good times, with Redeth(Richard) and his other half...

Heading up...... Richard in the rear view...LIL DOT there, lol.

Before that we stopped at the same spot as last time and wheeled around a bit, testing out Richards new-to-him used tires and my new OEM Reboot Kit I did on my CV's(and the new to me Aisin IFS hubs I installed).... all of it worked GREAT! .....

Then Redeth heading up and down the opposite way I was doing it in July(was going up the hill he came down, while I was in 2WD-4L .....) But THIS TIME, the first, less angled hill he had so much frustration with last time, ... he made it up! lol....

Then we headed up Big Rock Creek Road, backside of the Angeles Crest, passing Valyermo and St. Andrews Abby, Devils Punchbowl and such....; These guys were doing around 100mph, EASY! SHOCKED my coolpix actually caught it, lol......

Headed up into the mountains ahead of us in the "motorcycle pic", found a good spot, WHICH WAS UNREAL, considering how crowded it was in the Angeles Crest National Forest... pretty much EVERYWHERE, but especially where nice pools of CRYSTAL clean icemelt are, ya know? .......

Cooked up some GRUB, light summer style menu... I think Richard and his lady liked it...

Then, heading back, Richard and his Lovely GF(I'll let him share her name... not sure he's wanting to, lol).... decided they wanted to wheel a bit more. So, we had to decide to go up and over the top of Big Rock Creek and risk tearing up his second set of used tires... OR, go back the way we came... We went back and found A GREAT spot to wheel! Tons of Dirt Bike and Quad Trails that are perfectly legal for 4WD's... AND, EMPTY of ANYONE... Couldn't believe it. Anyway, I only have one video that Richard's GF took, and my battery died RIGHT BEFORE what Richard said were some CRAZY flex out of my "Ruby" that he didn't think was possible, climbing up some REALLY steep stuff with nearly no skinny pedal(I am locked in the rear, yes,...so that helps... as does the tires, but the flex shots would have been GREAT! hahaha) He has WAY more video than I do of that second place... So I'll wait for him to upload em and share. I'll get some still shots from some of the videos as well... Just have some editing to do anyhow, ya know?(lil potty mouth going on here and there, lol)... NO< not me lol.... Just messin with ya, Richard... .......

This last spot was GREAT, plenty of wheeling within these few square miles without having to get stuck way up in a mountain with just two rigs, one of which is very stock.... So I will find the GPS coordinates and share with whomever in SoCal wants to try it out(it's 10 minutes from nice clean water for day chillin, eating and taking a soak)... and plenty of trouble to get in without being in the middle of nowhere, ya know? First hill we went up, my batteries died and the others couldn't be found! hahaha. Oh well... like I said, Richard will have more...

Also wanted to toss up some pics after fully done with the last wheeling spot.... We hit a lil mud along the way, hehehe>>>>

One last parting shot, leaving the Angeles Crest National Forest, .... Los Angeles View in this shot....

VERY beautiful things around here, if you can just handle "THE STUFF I CAN'T really mention on this site! hahaha" ..... Richard will chime in, hopefully, on how beautiful that spot was that we took a swim and ate... And how it was RIGHT ON the Canyon Road! Still can't believe how lil crowd there was on the Creek... BUT, then again, the people all camping up at Sycamore Flats for the holiday? Yeah, ..that crowd? WOWWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Must have been 200 Tents in 12 Camp Spots within that site. ... Can you say "Holy Late Night Drunken Mariachi fights!!!" Right Richard? hehe. Even where we were, ... swimming, etc... It was a group around 20 showed up... VERY respectful of us 3, and just went to the other side of the Creek and kicked it.. NO super loud music, etc.

All in all... was a VERY nice day that I needed VERY much so! Thanks for throwing it out there, Richard/and other Half! Hope you guys had as much fun as I did. (Sorry bout the possible gear box failure, Richard ... BUT, that's what happens with 5K RPM and LOTS O Skinny Pedal through the Mud some times, right? lol.
