Possible rod knock, video inside to help
I was out wheeling the other day, got stuck in a snow bank... and on the way home my 1990 4Runner 3vze sounded like this...

Does anyone have any ideas what that is? Valves?

not any real power loss.... I drove it 15 miles home at 55mph. It's loud. That clip was taken at a stoplight then driving away.
I don't know how to change the title

don't quote me on that but it really really sounds like a rod knock. Maybe its because its the 3vze but when i spun my rod bearing I was barely able to keep it at 5-10 mph without having it stall out and I have a manual trans. By the sound of the clip yours is an auto?

hmmm I wonder if he bent the oil pan and its a rod hitting the pan? which would explain the sound of a rod knock without a power loss. I wouldn't drive it till you figure out what it is though.

not too familiar with the 3vz-e as I have the 22r, but I remember grounding out a 70 camaro and bending the oil pan but it bent it to where the flywheel was hitting so it bent the flywheel and took off a few teeth. But I guess that's what happens when you go 70mph on the road and get air born a little lol.

that is excatly what my 3.0 sounded like when I spun a bearing. You can pull the pan with the motor in place and check. I did.
My bearing was eaten away to nothing on one of the rods. I needed to keep it on the road so i bought some aftermarket bearing and replace them all. It still knocked but much less and i drove it like that for another 5 months, albeit sparingly.
I changed them all with the motor in place from the bottom.
Then I pulled all that crap out and put in a 3.4 from a 97 Runner. Best decision I ever made was to not put another penny into that 3.0
Here is a link to my old thread asking for help on this as well.
