I'd have to agree.. I love my 3vze... I'll probably love it even more when I give it a needed tune up, ISR mod, and exhaust... Even then, right now it's runnin' like a champ and has a lot of power... so... 3vze for me! Though, it would be nice to be able to pop a supercharger on there... why isn't there an aftermarket s/c for the 3.0??

personally I'd take the 3rz(2.7) over both, it has more power than the 3vz is inline 4 so easier to work on, costs less, and can be tuned really well. I read about some having 1000hp.

Actually the 3rz has the same ratings of 150bhp @ 5000(?)and 177ftlbs @ 4200(?)

All I remember after looking at the specs is that the 3rz had the same power but at a higher RPM than the 3vze. Personally I'd take a 2jz-gte over any other toyota engine.

But you're right a 4cyl would be a LOT easier to work on in our engine bay....wanna do my timing belt for me? lol

The 22RE is a dog on the highway....I'll stick with my 6...Still a dog but not as much of one (it actually is fairly adequate in most cases) . Let's face it in a '90 or above it's hauling about 4000 pounds...it's a truck not a sportscar and it drives like one...That's one of the things I like about it. lol

I've driven the 22REs off road and it's a great engine there.

3VZE for me...

I like the torque I have now witnessed from mine. Since I no longer have a burnt out exhasut valve and a free flow cat, I like the power. Sure it aint american V8 power, but it gets the job done and gets much better mpg then my wife's 5.9L V8.

I have both, a 95 3.0 auto (89K) and an 87 22-RE (5-speed) (177K). Gas mileage aside (14 on the v-6/21 on the 4), it's not a fair comparison, given the differences in the transmissions. As others have noted, the automatic eats up tons of power and economy on the v-6. I'd love to try a 3.0 5-speed. All in all, though, I think I prefer my 22-RE.

P.s. It's nice to have both.

H.

My 22re will do 80 on the highway with my motorcycle in the back and still getting ~20mpg...perhaps it's a dog when it's hauling the extra weight of a 4runner, but I think it's perfect for the pickup.

Yeah but is that 80 comfortably or @ 6000 RPM? Oh no doubt the 22RE is better in a pickup than in a Runner.

I'd take a 3.0 over the 22! The 3.0 gets a bad rap, people just don't understand them and mostly don't know how to work on them! Yeah, they had the dreaded HG recall and they're a dog,The pcv valve sucks to replace and the crossover is a misengineered mistake!
I don't regret R & R'ing mine, It made a big diff.! A lot more power and torque! The reliability is also great, I had over 297,000 original miles on mine until the HG started to leak! (1st HG and 1st time engine was apart!)
I get over 21 mpg on my beast, I think that's pretty damn good! The torque of the 3.0 is pretty credible even from stock!
Just my .02!

Count me in with the 22RE crowd. It's a good engine that is reliable and easy to work on. Aftermarket support is still good, even though 22RE's haven't been sold new in the US for almost a decade.

I get about 20 mpg and have no problems cruising on the highways.

Just an old 80's Honda Shadow 750...paid $800 so I can't complain too much.

3VZE for sure. I had one in the 89 w 5spd put 130K on it, and it ran as good the day I sold it as the day I bought. I just got the v6 95 runner w 50K on it 5spd and it has no lack of power for me. It does have factory 31's so I think it has the 4.56 diffs. The only time it lacks power is with stuff on the roof or lots o gear inside. I compared my 89 with my friends 22re 5spd 89 in high school in all conditions, long road trips, sand, hill climbs, the 3vze outpreformed every time except in mpg.
Keep in mind they are all toyota trucks and except for the newer ones 96+ do not have lots of power. Maybe that is why the drivetrain lasts so long.
Quote from a south African Friend: "If you want to get there, buy a land Rover, If you want to get back, buy a Toyota."

Most 22RE's don't see 6000 rpm, and I doubt many 3VZE's do either. On my 22RE powered truck, 100 mph is about 4200 rpm, which is plenty fast for me.

Still gotta stay in the 3VZE camp. Maybe if I was buying one strictly for offroad I'd feel differently...Nahhh. But hey...it's all good...everyone gets what they want

6000 is 200 rpm beyond redline, however mine has seen 6400 once and 6000 about 3 times.

It has seen 5800 more times than I can count however....

can it go any faster than 80? I'm just curious...it dosent quite matter for a truck or runner but is that as fast as she'll go?? what RPM's are you at when you are going that fast?

22re can deffintly go faster than 80. I can get it up to 92-93 mph indicated, but my speedo is off from my tires so it accually is about 100mph. Thats haulin ass in a truck, no need to really go that fast, I have only done it like twice. Beside I dont even think my tires are rated to that speed.
