Pinging annoyance!
Hello all! This is my first post of my 1990 Toyota 4Runner. I had to replace my timing belt as it gave off. But the important thing is that sometimes when I start it, it gives out delayed Ignition. I turn it to start and it take likes half a second to crank. That's one thing. By the ways it's a 3.0 v6. The other thing is that when it warms up, it all of a sudden drops down from 1700 rpms to 1100. Then, it starts shaking badly. I replace the Tps already but it didn't work. It has a new Distributer and wires and spark plugs, new fuel filter and all. And I have to let it warm up a while till the shaking goes aways and the engine then idles great. Also the smell of the gas smells like it's not burning it right. White smoke comes out the tailpipe but the smell of gas. Anyone ever been in this scenario? I've been dealing it for half a year already! It's pretty annoying. It also has little power. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And also when accelerating, it sputters and then jumps 1000 whole rpms. I accelerate it slowly when that happens

Hey guys wanted to add up. I found out my pcv valve is broken. It needs a new grommet. Can that make my rough idle go away? And what happens if I drive it like that? With the pcv valve broke?

Yes, Can cause lean out.
Suggest go back and check timing belt again and make sure the marks line up correctly.
The idle down is normal, There is a cold engine idle up in the throttlebody, When coolent comes to temp it closes up and lowers the idle down.

Yea I checked all the hoses already. They haven't cracked or anything. Maybe I will check the timing belt again this afternoon. But that pcv was a PITA! It took me all afternoon yesterday! I have to take off the intake manifold off because the grommet was as hard as plastic. I couldn't take out the valve with needle nosed pliers either. But will check the marks this afternoon. Thanks

Well before the timing was off. The two cams were off but I'm pretty sure it's timed already because I did two revolutions before putting everything back together. And no how do you adjust it?

Update : so o fixed the pcv valve as well as the camshaft gasket. The engine is still idling rough! I check the timing marks and they were the same as I left them. What can it be? This is becoming really annoying as I can't fix the problem! Any answers would be greatly appreciated!

If idle is only rough on start up, I would suspect a vacuum leak or egr issue. I had a very similar issue on my Expedition. Turned out the egr port on the throttle body was plugged. If you already checked for vacuum leaks it might me a good idea to clean out the throttle body.

Actually, when I start it up it idles really fine. Once it warms up, it drops down and starts idling rough. I cleaned the Egr already and the throttle body. I'm thinking it's some kind of sensor or an injector. Do you guys have any idea of what sensor would do that? Besides the tps because I tried it with a new one and it did the same. Thanks though

And also what is Ignition timing? Because I'm not sure if that makes the engine surge. It's surges from 1000 rpms to 1100 rpms alot. I'm also thinking of buying better spark plugs. Can that be the issue? Because I put some new ones about a month ago but they were the cheapest. It also needs spark plug wires.

The cheapest work best, copper NGK V-power are the factory recommended plugs.
Ignition timing is the mark on your crank shaft that is displayed when you use a timing light with the engine on (and TE1 and E1 on the diagnostic port jumped with a wire/paperclip). There's no other way to check it.
Are you still having the rich condition at start-up? Could be an injector stuck open, or the Cold Start Injector not working right.

Yea I got some Champions at first so I think that's the problem. I am thinking on getting the copper ones. And yes it still runs rich. The exhaust has this like unburned gas smell unlike my other cars. But the thing is that it always smells like that.(unburned fuel.) not sure what can be. I'm maybe also going to try and unplug spark plug wires one by one to see if any cylinders are misfiring. I am thinking on jumping the two ports this afternoon.

Mine smells like gas a little at startup, and I just pass it off to old age. I've never had smoke though, if it's bellowing in the morning there's a more serious issue.
As long as it doesn't smoke and it clears once the engine is up to operating temp, I wouldn't worry too much.

Hey guys I got a code 41 today also as well as the 12. I have replaced the tps and nothing happened. So I just went and returned it to the store. What can it be? I'm thinking on replacing the whole top manifold and getting another one from the junkyard if this doesn't get solved
