Pic's of CB placement?
Looking to put a CB radio in my 89 PU would like to see some pics of where you have mounted yours. Any pic's that would give me ideas would be great.
Thanks

I've had this peice out few times before when i installed the head unit and i recently discovered that the ashtray light comes on when my head lights are on. So this is where i started thinking more than just the CB...

Setting the CB in place but now it's time for the Dremel:
Perfect fit:
I secured the CB by drilling one hole and it was enough to keep it in place. The next picture shows how it's mounted with one bolt.
I could'nt let the ashtray light go to waste so i came up with a plan.
I slightly grinded the rivets that held the light mount on the ashtray bracket and removed it. I then cut out a hole in the main trim peice (for the light) and more holes to mount it.
Light installed:
I used #6 hardware (3/8" flat head slotted screws, flat washers, and lock tooth washers) to mount it. The scuff mark you see next to the light was a mishap of the Dremel getting outta control:

i did the same thing as rocket and used the same thread as my inspiration, hahaha. it works out great and its out of the way. I have a 98 4runner so it was a little different but should be the same in your case. I just used a bunch of zip ties to secure mine. I have the same midland CB too.

For those of us with full size cb's i mount mine in almost the same place. If you take off the little plastic try, then bend the tab in red out of the way, you can fit a full sized cb back under the dash and basicly flush with the front of the dash. STill allow enough room for shifting (in both a 5spd and auto)
(hope you dont mind that i borrowed your pic then defaced it with my pi$$ poor job of illistrating the above)
(you can also keep your ash tray or replace it with a trailer brake controler)

Yep I have the Cobra 18 WXII or whatever it's called in my second DIN slot just like that. It's my favorite way. The cleanest I've ever seen a CB mounted in a truck.

I mounted a cheapie RadioShack one pretty much like rocket did, but didn't cut out the back - just drilled a big hole. It sticks out a little, and don't like it - I will be cutting the back. I put velcro along the top to hold it instead of using the thumbscrews.

I have an 89 4Runner that I want to mount a CB where the ash tray is. But, the ash tray in a 1st gen is above the radio. Is the ash tray the same size as it is in 2nd and 3rd gens?? anyone have pics of a 1st with a CB mounted where the ash tray is/was?
Thanks!!

That looks sweet!!
But I have a 1st gen, and I don't know if I can get one to fit where the ash tray is in my truck. I haven't seen any pics from anyone with a 1st gen that has a CB mounted there.
I also have a double DIN radio that I'm not willing to part with so I can't put the CB where the storage tray was.

I got my CB in the mail and did a pre-fit and something occured to me, how well does the speaker work installed in the ash tray? My truck is not the quietest thing on the road and I like to drive with the windows open so it only gets louder.
thanks,

I'm thinking about putting a CB in the same place now that I have seen how it's done. I really like the idea of removing the ashtray anyways. There doesn't need to be any smoking in a vehicle. It's bad for the vehicles health. I'm just going to buy a Radio Shack CB maybe. I know there is a guy around here that is great. He has done every one of my friends trucks. You go in and tell him how much you have to spend and what you want and he makes it happen. I can't wait till I'm out on the trail talking with everyone and modding my truck too.
Thanks for the pictures and the ideas.
