The paper clip trick
Okay, I am new to this board and have been reading on my problem I have been having with my 90 4 runner. It just all the sudden died on me while driving and had to have it towed home. I looked at this site and read on the paper clip trick and it runs with no problems while the paper clip is in. Take it out and it dies.
Now, my problem is I took it to my mechanic and showed him what I have done and he can not find the problem with this. Can somebody tell me please what they have replaced or what they have done to fix this problem. I have tried to locate the cor and all I can see is the computer behind the glove box unless I am looking for the wrong thing. If anybody has a picture of what it looks like, That would sure help me out.
Also if anybody has a part # for a cor so I can order one that would be a great help also.

Yes I jumped the fuel pump so it would run. If I took the clip out and turned on the ignition, I could not hear the fuel pump. When I put it in, You could hear it run.

The fuel pump doesnt turn on when you turn the ignition to run. The motor has to be turning over for it to kick on.
Jumpering those connections will make the pump run all the time. Thats why you could hear it.

not to contradict you Jay, but correct me if i'm wrong. like most other efi motors, with an electric fuel pump when you turn the key on, you hear the fuel pump kick on quick pressurizing the system prior to you starting it... it turns on for about 3 seconds or so. you can hear it every time you turn the key to the on position... is toyota a different system aside from a mechanical pump which will pump the fuel while the motor is cranking... no?

I remember my friends crawling over my truck trying to figure out why it wouldnt start, they said it was the fuel pump since they couldnt hear it kick on ohh silly domestic boys haha!
I just read a big topic on toyotanation about a guy having problems with his fuel pump. A member wrote a huge reply and I was going to refer to that for this but I forgot I will take a looksee and post back

Okey, here you go!
the Circuit Opening Relay that powers the pump is initially triggered by a lead from the STA terminal of the ignition switch - so the pump does operate while being cranked. Once the motor starts, the fuel pump switch in the air meter takes over.

It just puts you in 'diagnostic' mode. It shouldn't hurt you at all.
It's limp mode, that new computer cars go into when something stops working, it keeps the motor running.
might get worse gas mileage ?

same prob
i have the same prob in my 91 pickup but i cant figure it out and have been running on the paper clip for over a year on my dailydriver ...im stumped ...just gona tag along for this one hehe

So I don't Know if any of you still need info. But check it out. On my freinds 91 Toyota MR2 when you jumper those terminals it turns the fuel pump to max fuel pressure, Thus thats why you do that after you re-intsall your intake and fuel rail so you can check for fuel leaks, and set the timing with pump full blast, I may be wrong but if it were me I would replace your fuel pump.
