paint before new tires

At some point after installing my current set of tires, I decided it would be a good idea to repaint my rims right before the next set. With a quick glance at the photo below, you can probably discern that the time has come. My idea would be to jack up the truck one wheel at a time and spare the lugs by removing the wheel to rattle can a fresh coat of paint without bothering to mask anything involved, then repeat three more times, after about a half hour to dry. I would like to do this somewhat methodically so they don't turn out looking half-baked. As shown, they have a certain amount of rust and imagine the best preparation involving a wire brush, sand paper and/or a rusty metal primer? This is a base '94 pickup and would like to match the silvery finish in case there are any tips on looking up the color / referencing the dealer. Anyone has taken on this project, I would welcome advice or problems with this plan. Maybe a solid youtube video in mind to use this as a primer?

I just used silver wheel paint from Pep Boys. Key to good paint job is good surface prep. Go to car wash with a hand brush to clean them thoroughly of all dirt, grease, grim, and brake dust. Then when dry. Give the old paint a really good sanding and wipe down the dust. I had good tires, so I use blue painters tape. I applied a thin 1st coat let it stand 15 minutes then applied 2 follow up coats. Let it dry and lightly sanded. Then applied 2 coats of clear sealant. The clear sealant keeps the brake dust from staining the silver paint.

I also sanded the center caps, painted the ring and letters reds, and applied 2 coats of seal. That turns out to last about 3 years then sand and clear again.

I'd suggest taking them off as working around the lug nuts is a pain and will get overspray inside the wheel well and or on the exterior bodywork . Buy some good jack stands as can always use them.

Trim rings are 1986 OEM came on the truck. I like this classic look.

Good luck.

I'd paint them after new tires. Just mask them up like Joe S. did. The tire shop is guaranteed to jack your new paint up.
Plus when they yank off the old weights there won't be any new paint under it & you'll have to touch it up anyway. Ask me how I know this. LOL
