Over heating issues
Here is the back story that I know, the previous owner got into a front end crash and damaged the rad along with the fan&clutch set-up. He changed the radiator out for I am guessing a junk yard one but left the bent fan & clutch.
I owned the truck about 6 months before I notice the fluid in the rad was a little dark and smelled funny so I decided to flush it. After opening the the thermostat housing I discovered there was no thermostat, so I put a NAPA one in. Shortly after that it started to over heat every time I drove it. Right now the truck is sitting because I got the death rattle but before I had a chance to do anything about it the chain jumped while I was on the freeway, that did not end well.
That brings me to my line of questions, I have read that a 3.0 radiator will work on the 22re and I have been looking online and found a few radiators w/shroud off 3.0 and 3.4. Now my question is will the 3.4 radiator fit a 22re? Also does anyone know what the size(diameter) of the fans in the 3.0 and 3.4 are. I have been thinking of running an electric fan, I have a 19inch one sitting around here, but I want to make sure it will fit before I go spending a ton of money for a controller.
I will be going to some junk yards here in a couple of weeks but most the vehicles here get picked over pretty quickly and I don't know if I will find anything there.

A stock radiator is more than capable of cooling a 22re . Why not just replace with a radiator that you know fits. Also get a new OEM fan clutch and dual valve thermostat. It sounds like you are going to be doing a head and timing chain. Might as well do it right the first time...

The 3.0 liter for sure bolts up,I have one in my 87 turbo truck. It is definatly an upgrade because it has an extra row of tubes (if it's copper/brass anyway) and it's taller so you have more surface area. It will bolt right to the core support,and the stock shroud will bolt up (the one in my 1990 p/u did) and the hoses bolt up other than you have to get creative with the top one because the neck does not come straight out. The bottom you you just have to rotate a little because the neck will be lower due to the rad being taller. Now one problem you may run into is fill neck hood clearance. Seems like most aftermarket rad manufacturers only make one part# to cover both 88 and under 3.0's and 89 and up 3.0's. Most only make it to fit the 89 and up so the fill neck hits the hood when you try to shut it on the 88 and older p/u (89 and older 4runner). The one in my 87 doesn't hit,but it is an older visteon rad and I don't think they are available any more (we can't anyway) I believe they were bought out and merged with another company which sucks because it's the best quality rad I've seen for this part#. I built my own aluminum fan shroud and mounted a 16'' spal fan controlled by a spal harness/thermoswitch. My friend did the same and we are happy with the results. The fan hardly comes on other than a few times in traffic not moving.

I was investigating the whole Taurus / Villager / Quest fan mod, but ultimately went with a flex-a-lite kit that came with the controller. Had I done the former, I was going with a controller from http://www.dccontrol.com as they were highly recommended from folks here. IIRC, they are about $75.

It performs as advertised. I don't know for sure what the price was since I bought it over a year and a half ago, but I shopped for price and it was competitive. I provided a link in my first post that will give you more info. I tried to go with the cheaper Delta brand and it was not available. Delta took my money then ignored me. I did eventually get a refund through Paypal.

where is the best place to mount the probe? I saw somewhere and now I cant find the write up but someone had added and aftermarket one right into the thermostat housing by drilling and tapping it (I think), has anyone else done this or is there a better place to put it? And what is the best temp to set the fan on and off at?

I put the probe through the fins in the radiator.
I set the temperature by pointing an infrared thermometer at the engine block and setting the fan to come on at 195 F.

Just my two cents but something to think about; I noticed GM had electric fans on its 1500-series trucks but clutch fans on its heavy-duty trucks (2500-up). Also, the '94-96 LT-1 Caprice sedans/Impala SSs had electric fans but the Caprice/Buick Roadmaster wagons and 9C1 police cars had a special bracket for a belt-driven clutch fan.
My Tundra has a HUGE clutch fan.

GM had clutch fans up until 2008 for 1500 pickups, they did a lot of changes like going from a steering gear box to rack and pinion and so on. Nothing is wrong with either electric fans or clutch fans, the change in HP and MPG on our trucks is so minimal that you will never notice it.
