yeah i want to keep it all toyota for sure...i bought a toyota because i love toyotas, ive had gm's and i break them ive had dodges and i break them too...my yota may have a terrible motor and a knock but i still beat it just as hard as my other trucks and cars i have had and it still runs....from swamping it too driving through the pits climbing sand walls and jumping it to driving it to work and my girls house it still hasnt let me down...
i see no reason to swap anything but another toyota motor into it....even 4.3's have their issues...my buddy went through 3 in a year...and we drive alike so im not a big fan of the 4.3...just my opinion

Dude if your have and are ok with keeping an automatic and can find a whole car do a 1uz lexus v8 , I just finished mine and well worth it so far.
I had a 1997 tacoma xtra cab standard transmission with the 3.4 that I bought brand new from the dealer and this 4runner with the lexus v8 feels better driving down the highway.
I have read that this V8 is lighter than the 3.0 ( Never weighed them )alot more reliable than the 3.4 and stock has around 250 hp . I am getting better gas mileage with this V8 than I did with the 3.0.
I dont know exact mileage yet but when I had the 3.0 with a full tank I would go to work (30 miles ) drive around a bit then come back home and I would have 1/2 a tank left , now with the V8 I do the same thing but I still have 3/4 tank left.
Good Luck with whatever you choose to do .

I did the 4.3 after the 3.4 and the main reasoning was electrical.. I was tired of hunting down little bugs here and there and not to mention cost and time of replacement parts especialy sensors. I had alot of little issues that just bugged the crap out of me and the 4.3 (which is what I was going to do in the 1st place but didnt) was a better option for me and a trail only rig. The 4.3 runs off about 5 wires and parts are very cheap and found on the shelf at most auto parts stores. Not like toyota sensors all over $100 most cases and a week or two out. I always say to the people that dog me for not staying toyota that yes I may break down on the trail but ill be back within the hour while when one of your sensors goes bad Ill see ya in a few weeks I love the 4.3 way more than the 3.4 just for ease of working on, comperable power more tourqe, cheap, and very reliable. Im very glad I took out that 3.4 and put in the 4.3 aside from all the waited money it cost me. Read into my swaps more if youd like more info.

its a 95cpi (central port injection) out of a blazer or S10 i believe. I just bought the motor not an entire donor vehicle which is definetly the way to go if you can find one. for the 3.4 swap too an entire donor would be nice.

im sure you took care of this but on the 95-earlier they had plastic fuel line going to the throttle body which got hot and melted....and i can actually get a full donor 97 s10 blazer for 100 bucks from my step dad...hes a mechanic on the side and picked it up from one of his customers beacuse the frame is all bent to hell ...he says the motor runs beautiful with 138k
