My trip meter has been unreadable for several years, and I realized recently that my odometer wasn't working. I removed the instrument cluster from the dash and the speedometer/odometer panel from the cluster. I shook out a few pieces of broken plastic. The tenths roller from the odometer was cracked, and the reset gizmo on the back of the odometer was missing a finger. I reassembled and reinstalled the cluster: only the tenths roller would rotate, and the speedometer needle bounced wildly during driving. I ordered a used cluster online and swapped the speedometer panel: the speedometer works great now, and the odometer works normally.
However, the numbers on the replacement trip roller are unreadable, too.
Can I buy just new trip roller? Or, can I replace the trip roller with wheels from the old odometer roller?
I have viewed videos of odometer reset, and I feel confident that I can do that. Thanks
I have noticed that the trip meter on these combination meters fade, and the numbers will wipe off if you touch them. They were made differently than the odometer wheels, which seem to hold up much better over time.
I am sure you can just replace the trip meter wheels by themselves, but I don't know where you can get new ones. Toyota never sold those by themselves. They just came as part of the whole speedometer panel.
Maybe there is aftermarket parts that will work? I am not sure.
Goodness. I found a used "cluster" on EBay, but the trip meter was unreadable, also. I found a white marking pen and remarked the numbers. I was able to advance the new/used odometer to my realistic estimate of my clutch replacement mileage in November plus 1,200 miles per month since.
The odometer roll is crimped into place; I couldn't get it out with an expectation of putting it back in. So far, the speedo and odo are working OK. I didn't need to send it out to reset the mileage.
I will take out the odometer roll just to study how it works. There are a bunch of very small gears inside that link the wheels.
You can adjust the odometer, there are threads that show how with pics. I think its not 100 percent legal, but youre rolling it forward and not backwards so...
My 86 trip odometer is unreadable too, while the mileage odometer still looks like new. Was wondering if the mileage wheels will fit the trip odometer? Looks to be the same width and roundness.
I considered that replacement, also. But the rollers are made different to accomodate the reset feature of the trip meter. I have attached a photo of my old speedo cluster. I called a shop near Phoenix which could reset the odo and replace the trip meter, but I reset my "new" odo and marked the trip meter rollers.
