Noise from front end when braking

Noise from front end when braking
...but I don't think it's brake related. I also think I've heard it when just turning left over a curb.
This is driving me nuts now so I thought I'd throw it out there. 95 V6 4Runner. It used to be intermittent (2 months ago first remember hearing when on the trails) but now I am hearing it all the time in city driving. Whenever I brake with normal pressure like casually stopping at a light, if the road is not glass smooth, I get a 'rattling sound from the drivers side front end. I can't even pin point where it's coming front...could be the engine bay or as low as the wheels. The best way I can describe the sound is imagine putting a grape size rock into a gallon plastic milk jug and shaking it around but muffled through the firewall, etc. I just shook every front end steering/susp compnent and checked every nut I could see. Has the wheel off and checked the brakes etc. Nothing, everything is tight.
When I went out to test it again, I noticed something else, it only happens going forward. If I go in reverse and apply the brakes, no noise. If I'm going forward and slam on th brakes (snow covered road here) the ABS kicks in and no other noise. Any ideas? Anybody?
Appreciate it anything, thanks,

It could be a loose shock, worn balljoint, etc. I had a similar noise and the bushings that held the front shocks on were all dry and rotted out. Also it is possible that the brake pads are moving around in the caliper. I've had that happen too when I forgot to put the pad shims back in.

Thanks for the reply.
I jacked the side up by the control arm and checked the ball joint for play. Nothing. I double checked the brakes and all looks good. The rattle clip etc are all there and not bent...pads are tight in there. Checked the shock bushings top and bottom and they don't look bad and I don't get any movement or noise when shaking even when jacked by the control arm and it's loaded.
I checked the axles too and there doesn't seem to be any unusual play.
I'm at a loss In the past few days, the noise is now not only when braking. I get it over cracks in the road mostly...not big dips...but it almost always now. I can't find anything loose. Driving me nuts.
