No oil in filter??
OK so i been on here alot and always seem to have the oddest issues lol. When I FIRST bought the truck, i did a oil change. old filter was full of nasty oil. No issue changed and went on my way. Well today, like 4K miles later I decided that its a nice day to change the oil. I drained the old oil. filled it back up. went to pull off the oil filter, it was COMPLETLY dry. like the day I had bought it. I was like ok so this isnt right of cource. I looked on here to see about it, nothing. I went out to turn over the truck to see if the pump worked, and oh yes it does oil everywhere lol. SIGH. So I primed the new filter (same model) and it looks like its circulating. Oil kinda looks dirtyier after I just looked at it aafter I started it. So my questions are, would the wrong filter make it do this? Second are you supposed to priming these?
Thanks again to all of you. OH and, while I was at the local Publix I donated 5.00 under the Yotatech.com Community to the Childerns Hospital in Orlando, little jesture.

'89 22RE; I got it from my bro w/150,000 miles on it. First filter change I did, I didn't see hardly any oil come out of the filter. Same each time I changed filter. My '72 MOPAR has sideways mounted filter too, and a big gusher comes out when I spin the filter off.
I asked bro about it an he said: "its been like that since I did a Slick 50 treatment."
I just change oil and filter as usaual and don't worry about it. Guess I'll find out if/when I need to overhaul it...my $0.02

No its a Amsoil Filter, im friends with the dealer around here and he gives it to me for free lol. so not like that's a ty filter. But I installed a new one. see what happens. I just hope its flowing. going to wait about a week and pull it off again and see if it looks like its flowing.

After initial break-in of my new 22re (100 miles), I changed the oil and filter...very little oil in filter. Hmmmmm. I didn't prime the first filter, which I should have. I went ahead and installed a new filter, primed. I'll probably pull it off in 1000 miles just to check.

I'm thinking that if there was NO oil flow for 4k miles, you WOULD know it
the 20/22r's a rugged motor, but comon... lol
but that is strange...
I have noticed that during my oil changes, sometimes a lot of oil will trickel down the block when removing the filter, and other times there's hardly no mess at all... can't explain it... and that's with repeatedly sticking to the same fitler type; Fram ToughGaurd... I know, Fram = no no get over it; I never had any problems with them. But with my new motor, definately going with a Mobile1 and full synthetic

Why don't you guys just use Toyota filters? I buy mine in bulk, both our toyota pickups and the lexus all use the same filter. They're great and they don't cost anymore than the crappy ones. My dealer cuts me a deal (CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT???)
not sure why you're not getting oil through it tho. Thats strange. There could be a blockage in there. I'd pop the pcv valve off and put my compressor nozzle to the inlet. Can't hurt nothin.

if i remember right theres a lil hole below the fitting you screw teh filter onto, i think the oil drains back through that? ... also you can unscrew that fitting.

So change the filter THEN drain and refill? well no matter what priming the filter and so on seemed to work and oil is flowing through the filter i believe. Just going to prime the filter from now on. Thanks again all.

you are doing your oil changes right, turbo, i just have a sneaking suspicion that something is blocking the oil passageway...
maybe take the filter off and try to stick a Q-Tip of the tip of a paper cloth up there to see if there is any oil there at all... if not, then try to figure out what feeds that...
if that sounds stupid, then forgive me, but i dont know the 22r series of motors intimately...

x2, use yota filters. Also you can use the v8 filter (pt# 90915-yzzd3), its about an inch longer, costs the same and will fit the 22r/e, 3vze, 5vzfe..
My dealer would knock off %15 if I bought a case..

My filter always pisses oil all over the side of the block. Is your motor sludged up?
You were getting flow for sure as the motor wouldn't have lasted 4k without it, but it appears it just wasn't getting to the filter. First time I've seen that...
