No Compression
Well I just got the bad news from Toyota. The #6 cylinder's compression sucks but the rest are ok. I was told the pressure was 30 dry and 50 wet. I really have no idea what this really means and if I need a new engine like thay said. Any input would be great. I need to make this last a little longer so I can save some cash. They quoted me $5500 (36 labor hrs) for rebuild or 2k to swap an engine that i provide. So it would be 4k to swap or 5500 to rebuild.

Yep, same boat here.
My 3.0 has zero compression in cylinder #3.
I was quoted around $6K to put in a new engine or rebuild.
I came up with a better solution.
I bought a new FJ Cruiser
I am not a fan of the 3.0.
I liked my 22RE much better that I had in my '90 truck.
So now, you gotta decide if you want to shell out that much for the same engine, or perhaps get a kit to put a 3.4 in there which is more reliable.
A few on the forum here have done it.
PD, if you are not blowin' smike of using oil, more than likely it is burnt valves.
My oil looks fine, and I do not use a drop dispite the way the engine runs.

Since it is only number 6, it is probably a burned valve. This happens because the exhuast crosses over behind the engine and collects into one pipe right at number 6. Search, there is plenty of information about this issue.
As others have said, it really is not worth it to put another 3.0 in there. As any other Toyota engine, it is pretty reliable (Although I would venture to state it is at the bottom of all Toyota engines). But for being a 3.0 V6 it doesnt have the power, nor does it have the potential that other engines such as the 3.4 have. It also has famous weak headgasket problems.
I just did a 3.0 > 3.4 swap, it really is not that difficult if you are even somewhat mechanically inclined. I am very mechanically inclined, but by no means am a mechanic, and I didnt have much problem. Again, search on this topic too, there is a lot of information out there regarding it. Just to throw it out there, I spent $2500 total for my motor, all of my upgrades(centerforce dual friction clutch, downey headers, K&N FIPK, custom exhaust), and all of the small things as well. This was with me doing all of the labor though.

Thanks guys,
I would love to do the 3.4 swap but I dont know if its worth it of if I can afford it. All I need out of her is to get me on the beach to go fishing and tow my camping gear to NY. under 5K miles a year. I figure I could swap a new 3.0 for alot less than a 3.4.

you could get another 3.0 reman engine for about 1800-2000 bucks but it will most likely be a piece of ÅÅÅÅ. I would just do the 3.4 swap and get it over with.

I was also thinking about doing that to my '91, but after adding it all up...
$20K invested into rig already with used purchace price back in November of '98 and all of my mods.
Ad in the $6K for labor and a 3.4 or a 3.0, I get close to $30K into a rig with a blue book value of $4k.
Most can see why I decided to get a new rig.

Way too expensive for another 3.0, heard other story that they got it replace by a long block and after a year the HG fail again, I would just look around further more for the 3.4 swap, I got a quote for a swap 3.4 to my rig and he said if I willing to pay him $4k they'll willing to do it with the use 3.4 V6, so swaping is the best choice, and I would just bring it back and part that junk, mine already have a BHG on cylinder #1 ( coolant leak into cylinder #1) very common, I never tought it would happen to me after reading that cylinder #1 and cylinder #6 you should be worry about and ˟˟˟˟˟ it happen as they indicated so mine was just sitting in the garage for 5 month lol I'm just thinking what I'm giong to do with it and waiting for the $$ to swap it, I personally love driving it, just the problem lies on the engine. I believe my truck hasn't had a HG replace when the recall was still on the effect so I might as well give them a email to motor safety to ask TOYOTA again to put that recall back cause its not fair for stopping it, if I new this truck have recall throwing at them I would'nt buy it in the first place, and hooe you guy will throw them email about the situation.

has anyone checked the valve adjustment on this engine,i have a 91 runner i bought for $300,3 different shops told the guy he needed an engine, put it on a trailer, took it home, one cyl had 30psi,adjusted the valves & guess what-it runs like a champ, guys these engine have to have the valve maintained & the cooling system maintained.hey whats the worst that could happen-its prolly going to burn a valve anyway-but it might get u dwn the road long enuff to save money for a reman or a 3.4 swap,no more than the compression comes up with oil it doesnt sound like rings to me,oh & by the way that 91 runner i bought has 302,000 miles on the original 3.0
