detonation at idle? not likely. more likely- pistons tapping valves due to incorrect cam timing (not to be confused with ignition timing). slap in the wrist pins can let the piston float at tdc and tap the valves ever so slightly.
that would also explain the difficulty in getting the timing dialed in- since the cam sprocket has more teeth than the distributor drive gear, one or two teeth on the sprocket can push the distributor into a netherworld where one distributor gear tooth either way is too much.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, no progress just yet...
George thinks the timing is just about perfect, and the lack of throttle response is due to the weak compression in the one cylinder, either 2 or 3, don't remember...
I doubt very seriously it's got anything to do with the tps, it was never removed from the TB and the TB was never removed from the Intake mani.....
I'll let you guys know if I get anywhere, but I doubt it'll be today...
I could care less about this truck anymore, I am fed up with it, the only reason I'm even humoring him is because I am hoping to receive some sort of payment for this.
He's had my laptop out at the cape getting fixed for over a month now, and quite frankly I think he's holding it hostage, and I am pretty upset about that.......

Hey try putting a few TRD stickers on it. I've heard that does wonders for all kinds of problems, while even boosting horsepower by 15%. This sounds like about a 3-sticker level problem to me. Maybe four just to be on the safe side.
OK just kidding. I just didn't have anything intelligent to say. Good luck man!

Update
Hey guys!!!!!
Just wanted to let you know I pulled the head back off today, and I found several problems;
I dunno if the head is cracked, or what, but, I noticed that the exhaust manifold gasket was all black around the #4 port, and yet, the rest of the gasket looked almost brand new.
Also, I noticed that the #1 and #4 pistons ar "too clean" on the intake recess, which leads me to believe that we had some piston to valve contact which would explain the the "detonation" I thought I was hearing...
so, now we are suck with a delema...
Should I let George spend the money to get the original head rebuilt (we're returning the other head regardless) or, should i try to convince him to buy a used or rebuilt engine???
Keep in mind, a rebuilt had costs $350, plus another head gasket set, Plus the cost to have the block resurfaced, new rings, new main bearings, new connecting rod bearings etc etc etc
He found a used engine AND tranny for 1200
the cheapest I found a used engine was $900
I would rather just pick up an engine and call it good, but Mom knows him alot better than I do, and said "You can't tell him that, he wont have it"
so, it looks like I'm going to be building an engine, but, we shal see....
Thanks again guys,
Tim

An attarco head is only $250 shipped, and it comes with all the gaskets you'll need. It's a new casting with all new parts, not re-conditioned. They're not crap either. I've had mine on for 6 mos. and 20,000 miles and it's runnin like new, with a bottom end that has 200,000 miles on it. It's really not worth it to throw a different engine in when this head is a pretty cheap fix. I did it. It was my first head gasket change on a Toyota also. I hope this'll help man.

When I bought my truck the P.O. had warped the head so bad that a new cam wouldnt even turn in the races. Had to use a wrench on it. Found this out after having it shaved, new guides, and valves ground. Thankfully my machine shop guys are the best, they traded me another rebuilt head for no more money. So I,m gonna say new head. Also had a fit getting mine running turned out to be the igniter, only worked right half the time. Did the same crap yours did. Started right up then fought me. My .02 says rebuild the bottom end and throw a new head on it, George will be stylin for years.

Thanks for all the info guys!!!
HelliphinoN8 do you happen to have a website for them, or should i just google it?
Also, if the block passes the straight edge and feeler gauge test, then should i even worry about doing anything to the bottom end?
The only reason I am asking is cause he "only wants another 150k out of it, that'll put him at 500k lmao)
Like I said, everything in the ignition system was replaced except fot the distributor and the ignitor, and I seriously doubt either of them are bad, cause before I pulled the head off, it was running again. Poorly, but it was running.
Thanks for everything guys!!!

Yeah. Google it. I think they're on ebay as well. No b/s man, this head is working great. As I said my bottom end has around 200k on it and runs like new! The compression test #'s are perfect. Toyota waayy over-engineered these engines, and held super tight tolerances unlike the American brands. A rebuilt 22RE will never last as long. I've heard plenty of stories. Basically, if there were no probs in the bottom end, don't touch it. It's fine.
