Newbie replaced Head Gasket, Truck wont start...

Yes I have the crossover tube installed.
Yes the truck was running before the work was preformed, in fact, he drove it to my house for me to work on.
I agree that the block should have been stripped and rebuilt also, but, I was not "allowed" to do that, I guess maybe now he will listen to me when I make suggestions, and not be so "cheap" And I am not in any way calling him cheap, I just didn't know how else to word it.
Anyway, I discussed his options with him, and it looks like he's going to look into getting another engine, so that I can "do it right" this time, Whole new rebuild, rings, bearings, valve job, everything.
Like I said, hopefully he will take this as a learning experience, and trust my judgment when and if he needs me to fix something else, like he wants me to fix his heat, and his A/C...
We'll see how well that goes LOL

next time just inform him this is how the job must be done or i am not doing it... no point trying to be superman.. you seem to know what needs to be done..
some people are just really cheap and think they can cut huge corners by going backyard bush league..but you cant and he cant even do his own "head gasket" job himself so that should tell you something!

Right on man, I was trying to be nice about it cause he takes really good care of my mother, but, I guess there's just certian stuff you can't be nice about.

No codes? Check all of your grounds. Take the cables off the battery and fully charge the battery.You said the motor ran,but so bad you shut it off.The valves and timing have to be off.

Could one of you please tell me where all of the grounds are, and were the attach to??? As far as I know, they are all hooked up, but, this is my first "major" experience with a 22re...
The battery is fully charged, george went out and bought a really nice charger...
I set the valve lash today, and I've checked the timing like 100 times, even went as far as moving the cam gear one tooth in each direction, and I know the distributor is on #1 with the engine at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke...
How would I verify weather or not the cold start injector is working???
I really appreciate all the suggestions guys!!!

i always install grounding straps from then block to the frame from the intake manifold to the body and from the head to the body, improper grounding or a bad ground can make fuel injected engines do some funny stuff. as i mentioned in an earlyer post if you have a couple sets of jumper cables you can temporarly add additional grounding using them and see if it will fire.

OK guys.....
I am now lead to believe that the distributor or the coil is bad...
Even though they both passed the resistance tests, I just knew something had to be wrong, even with the bull s*** compression readings, it should run!!!
Just to prove a point to myself, I pulled a plug wire off a running 4 cylinder, it still ran, so, i pulled another one, it still ran!!!!!!!
Imma blow this truck to pieces if I tell George to buy another 500 bucks worth of parts and the son of a b***** doesn't run!!!!!!!!!!

this is odd, you have fuel, you have spark, and you have air, welllll it should start, if not it has to be the timing, 9 times outta 10 anyway. wish i could help ya, just went through this on my v6....vacuum, timing and wiring have all been checked sounds like. i would shot for that timing onnnnnne more time....

yep yep. having compression (although marginal in one cylinder) spark, fuel and air, the only realistic thing left is ignition timing... well maybe cam timing but with the 22re being an interference engine if the cam were off significantly the pistons would be bumping the valves, but that's not to say the cam isn't off one tooth though...
and for the timing to read correctly but still not start the engine the distributor rotor would have to be either 180 degrees out or the spark plug wires would have to be on the wrong plugs.

if the valve timing where off enough for it to not run his compression numbers would be much lower, his problem probably goes back to his weak spark he had mentioned in another post.
