I just realized that the old head had round CC's and the head I received (22re) has oblong CC's.

I must have a pre-1985 block, in an 87'.

Just got a call from J&C Enterprises, they received my old head, said it was indeed from a 22r, pre-1985 block.

So I've got a bazilian questions now. I really don't know much about the 22r compared to the 22re, except that the latter is fuel injected. So if it's a pre-1985 engine it was retrofitted with fuel injection, right?

Yea, it sounds like someone put an older block in your truck. They might have used a motor from a Celica or got the right head so that the EFI bolted up.
Curious - did your block have a knock sensor installed?

Anyway.. You're in the situation you're in:
1) see if they can swap you for the correct head. Early heads come in 3 flavors:
a) No EFI holes or bosses (carb'd only)
b) EFI bosses, no holes or threads (can be drilled and tapped)
c) EFI holes and bosses

You want C. They may be hard to find as pre-85 trucks didn't come with EFI. You can sometimes find these heads with the Celica croud. If you're lucky, they'll have the right head to swap you. It's important that they pay attention to the mounting holes on the intake side of the head.

IF they don't have it, get your old head shipped back and have it cleaned, decked, and rebuilt by a machine shop. It should run around $200 with the valve job and reassembly. Feeling ambitious, add engnbldr's .5mm over stainless valves...

Not necessarily but who knows for sure. There were 1984-1985 22RE's as well. They were in the Celicas. I had one I got for almost nothing. Initially, I thought I was going to rebuild it and put it in my 1993 until I did a bit more research. Then I used it for the crank and rods which are the same. Either way, it sound like you do have the older one.

Did you look to see if your's was the laser block as shown in the link I posted? That will tell you if it is the older block for sure. You can also measure the deck height on yours for further confirmation. Measurements are also in the link.

Good info fellas. I ordered another head yesterday from J&C, I'm assuming they are aware that the head I had accepted EFI, but I guess I'd be an idiot to assume anything. That really sucks that my truck doesn't have the original 22re, I know there isn't a huge difference, but at least I would know what replacement parts to buy. Man, I thought I got a killer deal on this truck. Hindsight=20/20

If I have to, I'll take it to Noland Heads here in KC. My old head was cracked in four places. But other than that it's fine.

It's not a big deal, unless you go to rebuild.. Pretty much everything else is compatible. No performance differences.

That's good to know. I thought they were nearly identical as far as performance goes. Well until I get the new head and get everything tightened up, I shouldn't have anymore questions.

Thanks guys, you been a big help!
