Well, you are right, I can't just go crush a beauty like this much as I wanted to. I think if I let it sit for about 6 months without touching it I should be able to do a 3.4 swap without wanting to put a match to it. Which works out because we're about to be slammed with work so won't have time to wrench anyway.
I'm going to list the '88 for cheap to make some space and not piss off my neighbors too badly and will just snowblow or pay someone to plow this winter.
The '98 I looked at was too rusty and had a hole in the driver's front frame by a body mount hiding under some plastic. Also lots of auto 3rd gens (at least) have the radiator rot out and backflush into the tranny. The ad said new radiator and lines, I asked the seller if the radiator flushed into the trans and he said it had. Honest guy anyway. 3rd gens and New England just don't mix, but on the plus side there will be no shortage of rotted out donors with strong engines to choose from.
So for my work road trip vehicle I bought an 03 with the 1UZ V8 the other day. Automatic, but that's better for Boston traffic anyway. Some undercarriage rust but it was more than 2 grand under blue book average - guy had it listed as "4 Runner" with a space on CL so it wasn't getting noticed. I can't even count how many deals on things I've gotten over the years because people don't check the spelling of their listings and because CL, and Ebay to a lesser degree, only show listings which are an exact spelling match.
So she'll live to see another year.
