need help wont shift into 4 low
hey guys hope you can help.
ive got an 86 toyota pickup with the 2.4 fi motor and the auto tranny. i went out wheeling today and couldnt get the transfercase to shift into four low. i started diagnosing the problem and this is what i have found.
it shifts into four high fine and four high works great. i was thinking it might have something to do with the linkage and so checked it all out and it is fine.
i went onto the forum and read some info about how the selector swich can cause this problem. i ruled that out because i was able to get it into four low. i have narrowed the problem down to this. when i manually shift into four low with the ignition off and then start the truck it will go into four low and stay there untel i shift out and then it wont go back in. i was reading a few other posts about the add system sending a signal to the computer to let the t case shift into 4 low. but correct me if im wrong but i dont think they had the add system on an 86. this truck also has manual hubs if that helps. i read a post where one guy was able to ground a wire to disinguage a system that wont let you shift into four low if your going to fast. has anybody done this or know what could possibly be the problem. i just dont want to have to turn the truck off just to get it into four low and then start it up again. a previous owner has played with the wiring a little bit when he installed an alarm and a stereo. got to love electrical problems.
so i have narrowed it down to this problem. do you guys have any ideas or ways to fix it.
thanks in advance.

You are correct...you do not have ADD, thats on newer model v6's
basically 89-95 p/u's and 90-95 runners...
What im thinking...and not trying to insult your inteligence...
But I noticed my tcase doesnt like to shift if the tranny is in gear...even completely stoped and clutch fully in...
So are you trying to do this stoped and with the tranny maybe in 1st..?
If so that could be your problem..

With an auto tranny don't you have to have it in neutral before you shift the T-case into low range?
edit. Nevermind. I just read my owners manual and it says
"To shift from "H4" to "L4", reduce speed to less than 18 miles per hour (30 km/h) and move the front drive control lever."

EDIT: just saw that you have an auto. I'll second that you make sure the trans in in N before you try to shift into 4L
