Need help identifying a grinding/rubbing sound on my '88 Pickup
My first post. Yotatech has been a great resource for troubleshooting my issues, but my current issue finally has me breaking my lurker status.
So first off, here's my ride:
It's a 1988 Pickup SR5 4x4 22RE 5 Speed Manual. All factory original. I've had it for over a year now, and it's sitting at 145,000 miles. It's been pretty good to me so far, and I've only had to replace a cracked radiator. I'm a very new to the auto DIY world, but this truck is pretty fun to work on...so far. I would love to fix her up, but my budget isn't quite there yet.
On to my latest issue. Below is a youtube video of the noise my truck is making.
Here's my troubleshooting notes:
Thanks for taking a look. Hoping someone out there knows what the heck is going on, or can give me troubleshooting tips to find the culprit.

Here's my troubleshooting notes:
- Happens randomly while at speed
- Happens at various speeds
- When the noise happens, slowing down to a few MPH will stop it
- Noise seems to be irrelevant from transmission. happens in gear, or while coasting in neutral.
- Jerking truck to the left will pause noise for a second. Jerking right seems to have no effect.
- Hard to pin-point, but really think it's happening near rear of truck.
- I do feel a surge/friction when it happens.
- My shot in the dark is rear differential
Thanks for taking a look. Hoping someone out there knows what the heck is going on, or can give me troubleshooting tips to find the culprit.
