Old post but I didn't want to start a new one. So I was wondering if my plan will work. First, obviously, I'll drain the coolant. Next I was going to remove the T-stat and put the housing back on so that I can flush water straight through. Next unscrew the upper hose and plug the inlet at the top of the radiator. Then fill the radiator with water, start the truck and just keep fill the radiator until the upper hose is gushing clear water. Is that a good method?

that seems like more effort than needed, I drain and fill with sodium citrate cleaner and dH2O and run for about 10-15 min, drain, allow to cool for 20-30 min, the start the same process with straight dH2O x 3 rinses or so to get the cleaner out and all old coolant.

Then refill with correct amount of 100% coolant and top off with distilled water over the next day or so, checking frequently.

Whole process normally takes me about 3-4 hours but it's only about 40 min of work if that, in between, I can get a bunch of other stuff done.

We have a flush gun to do power flushes, but you can get a milder version at home if you have an air compressor. Take the t-stat out. re-install housing with hose still attatched. Un-hook lower hose from engine. insert garden hose in upper rad hose (unhooked from radiator) and let the water flow through engine (not running) and out the water pump. If you have a blow nozzle for your air compressor, try to cram it into the upper rad hose with the garden hose and give it a surge of air periodically to agitate some of the gunk in the system. I like to do rad and engine separately so I'm not flushing the stuff out of the engine and into the radiator.
