need help choosing a new engine
my 3vze is getting old in its day. still runs well but i think its time for rebuild or a different engine. im looking at 1595$ for a reman long block but i was curious if there are any other options for an engine. i would like to have a 6cyl even though im sure everyone here will tell me to swap to 22re. so i guess my question is what would be the cheapest/easiest swap. maybe a 3.4? i dunno you guys know better than me since this is my first yota!

3.4 would be awesome, theres a bunch of write ups for it in the engine swap section. They allready have 190ish horsepower, and if you get one with the TRD supercharger, I believe its about 270 HP? someone correct me if I am wrong

i'm actually looking into the 7mge swap its the straight six from the older supras. sounds like an easy swap

I think Cherokees are reasonably reliable, some just as reliable as the average Toyota, its just not consistent. The proportion of lemons is probably substantially higher. I know that they aren't built as toughly as Toyotas though. There's no way those Dana 30s and 35s are near as strong as the 8" or even by many accounts the IFS CVs. Toyota beats out the Jeep on frame (obviously) as well.
I have a friend who did some work on a Jeep motor and he said it was hard to work on. I think I'd stick to Toyota myself, way more confidence in the design. I'm sure the 3.4 will blitz the Jeep straight 6 hands down in every category except initial purchase price.

price of course since they are everywhere and not imported. haha there is no contest on the frame since cherokees dont have one. all in all i like jeeps and toyotas and subarus and nissans. they are all good in their own little way

I would like to start by saying JEEP = Just Empty Every Pocket. I went rockcrawling in an old 89 4runner with ONLY a 3" body, 4" suspention & 33" meats. (No lockers, gears or anything but a worn out clutch) It was bad ass.
Bought a 93 Wrangler, worst move EVER! I should have bought a yota. Anyway after WAYYY more stuff done to it; it couldnt even hold a candel to the yota. Also the reliability was the queerist krap ever, always broken & super expensive for parts.
Dont ruin your yota, KEEP AWAY FROM A JEEP ENGINE!

as far as i know the supra turbo straight 6 is a DIRECT bolt on to the 22re motor mounts... the guy i bought my roll bar off of did that swap, and said he didnt have to change motor mounts, but had to redo the wiring.

I now own an 85 runner. The motor is torn apart into pieces, many many pieces... Anyway I am also wondering if i should rebuild the 22-RE or do a swap.
Swaps SEEM way more expensive, but after you add in a cam, bigger valves, rotating balance, and all the other parts & get it all machined rebuilding the 22re is not cheap either. Before you know it your going, hmm I'll just add this, that, the other thing. Oh yeah cant forget that other thing i just couldnt live without... Now rebuilding is 3-4K!!!

I'm here for the same reason you are, for help. I dont have your answer but I do have some advise. Stay away from that old supra engine. I have owned 2 of them, so I would know. The 7MGE & 7MGTE are the same engine only the 7MGTE is turbo so it has different compression rates. BOTH of the engines are HIGHLY prone to head gaskets blowing out. Research it, they go out all the time & once it goes it's hard to get a new one to seal properly again. On one of my Supras I did it 3 times before selling the car. So i bought another supra and it blew in that one as well. After that sold the car and got something else.
Now, the twin turbo motor from the MK4 supra would be sweet

yeah im just gonna go with the reman 3vze longblock for 1595, seems like a good deal to me. anyone here ever gotten a engine from oregon engine rebuilders? they have a lifetime warrenty

how many miles are people getting out of their transmissions/tcases? i have 312k and they work fine. always serviced at the dealer but im not sure if they will be as reliable?
