Wrong 1989-1991 Wiring

I have found the starter relay under the dash on the A Pillar and confirmed the wire colors. I was wondering how I should correct this issue, which wires should go where?

Should I connect the load portion of the relay to the battery? And keep the control portion to the IGN switch?

Very tight area to work in as well.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: If the fix is to connect the load (switched) wire to the battery what size fuse is recommended for that new wire connected right to the battery?

Green Relay In Bad PHYSICAL Location

Very tight area to work in as well.
If that's the case best solution would be to add a starter relay located between battery and starter solenoid. Like below. "WHY" is explained at very bottom.

Even if your relay is wired correctly, it is in bad physical location.

IDEALLY A RELAY SHOULD BE ELECTRICALLY AND PHYSICALLY LOCATED BETWEEN POWER SOURCE (BATTERY) AND LOAD (STARTER)

STARTER RELAY IN CABIN, EVEN IF WIRED CORRECTLY IS IN BAD PHYSICAL LOCATION. Schematic for yours shows wrong wiring. A 1991 with similar looking relay is wired correctly. However, the relay is still in bad physical location (wire too long). Still do not trust Toyota's schematics; Back then, it did not have very brilliant electrical engineers OR draftsmen- hence, bad relay location and wiring.

This is the check member JPL did on his that proved to have correct wiring - but bad physical location in kick panel.

Some times starters need to be shimmed for proper alignment. Never had to on my 86 2WD manual truck. Seems this worked like a shim and prevented proper alignment.

Thanks for those very helpful images and tips. I have one question about the control wire on the new 4 pin relay that goes to ground. It seems that wire will bypass the manual clutch start/stop switch. (BLK/RED)

If I wanted to keep this in the circuit would I run another 1/4" male spade to the green relay BLK/RED terminal instead of ground?

So for the control (low amperage side) I would take the signal from the IGN switch to my relocated relay, then come back out my relocated relay, to the BLK/RED wire in the green relay box. If that makes sense

Most welcome.
No need to touch the original starter relay, because it is in bad locatio.
Just add new relay with short wire run. BOSCH style is good but better if you could re-purpose starter relay from another Toyota truck for its quality. I used 12AWG because it is such a short run.
Clutch safety switch will b un affected. "A" will only be on when orig starter relay comes on.

Happy to say, I've finished relocating the new relay! Not the prettiest spot where I got it but I'm planning on running an auxiliary fuse box soon and I'll relocate it there when it gets to that time.

Found this on amazon which looks like it will be perfect for running lights, starter relay, and whatever extra circuits you may want to add!

Amazon Amazon

Thanks for a the helpful information especially to RAD4RUNNER!

cranked it up maybe the 10th time since i added the relay, and it made that loud spinning/grinding noise. like the solenoid not kicking out all the way.

maybe it landed on an odd tooth on the flywheel.. it’s only got like 3000 miles on it (flywheel) but those starters may have been gnawing away at one of the teeth..

Grinding noise is becoming more frequent like it did on my previous starters.. it was grinding probably 3/10 times I've started it now.

How would I know if my starter needs to be shimmed?

Is it logical to assume my starter contacts are pitted already from the 4-5 months ago from my putting that last starter in before relocating and upgrading relay circuit?

How would you guys proceed?
